The group\u2019s two couples \u2013 <strong>Stevie Nicks<\/strong> and <strong>Lindsey Buckingham<\/strong>, as well as <strong>Christine<\/strong> and <strong>John McVie<\/strong> \u2013 split prior to Fleetwood Mac arriving at the Record Plant in Sausalito, California to create their 11th studio album, while drummer <strong>Mick Fleetwood<\/strong>\u2018s own marriage was crumbling. Fleetwood Mac channeled heartbreak, anger and drug-fuelled madness into the creation of one of rock music\u2019s landmark albums.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe were all writing songs about each other basically, although we were unaware of it at the time,\u201d Christine McVie said in the documentary <em>Classic Albums: Fleetwood Mac \u2013<\/em> <em>Rumours<\/em>. \u201cAll of the songs were about our own private relationships and our troubled relationships. I think it was John who suggested the name <em>Rumours<\/em> because we were writing, sort of, journals and diaries about one another.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><em>Rumours<\/em> won the Album of the Year Award at the Grammys in 1978 and would eventually sold 40 million records. Aaron\/Redferns<\/span><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<\/h3>\n<h3>\u201cDreams\u201d<\/h3>\n<p>One of Stevie Nicks\u2019 signature songs came about when she snuck away from the main studio in the Record Plant to visit an empty hall once used by Sly Stone, of Sly and the Family Stone.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI knew when I wrote [\u201cDreams\u201d] that it was really really special,\u201d Nicks said in <em>Classic Albums<\/em>.<\/p>\n<p>Nicks was confident enough in the song to bring it to the rest of Fleetwood Mac right away, though she worried about how the others might change her vision.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s always difficult to give your song to somebody and know that they\u2019re going to take it places you can\u2019t take it because they play guitar and piano and arrange music,\u201d she admitted. \u201cIf they do a good job, then it\u2019s great. In a new book titled Songbird: An Intimate Biography of Christine McVie, published Tuesday, November 19, writer Lesley-Ann Jones describes the first time Nicks, now 76, and Buckingham, now 75, were introduced to existing [\u2026]\t\t<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<p>Buckingham spoke of the push-and-pull of his creative partnership with Nicks, admitting that there were times he wasn\u2019t motivated to help achieve her vision.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhatever Stevie\u2019s music was, somehow I was this soulmate who just knew exactly what to do with it,\u201d Buckingham acknowledged. \u201cThat never went away. It just became a little bittersweet.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDreams\u201d topped the Billboard charts in June 1977 and would become one of Fleetwood Mac\u2019s most recognizable songs. I got out of bed, played it on the little piano I have in my room, and sang it with no tape recorder. I sang it from beginning to end: everything. I can\u2019t tell you quite how I felt; it was as if I\u2019d been visited \u2013 it was a very spiritual thing.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>McVie was hesitant about bringing \u201cSongbird\u201d into the <em>Rumours<\/em> recording sessions at first because she worried she wouldn\u2019t be able to recapture the magic of her first time playing it.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI was frightened to play it again in case I\u2019d forgotten it. I called a producer first thing the next day and said, \u2018I\u2019ve got to put this song down right now,&#8217;\u201d she recollected. \u201cI played it nervously, but I remembered it. Everyone just sat there and stared at me\u2026 I\u2019ve never had that happen to me since. Just the one visitation. It\u2019s weird.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><em>Rumours<\/em> producer and engineer Ken Caillat told fans at a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.grammy.com\/news\/ken-caillat-revisits-rumours\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Grammys Q&amp;A<\/a> in 2014 that he knew \u201cSongbird\u201d was \u201camazing\u201d the first time he heard it.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe were finishing up one of the crazy sessions [at] Sausalito Record Plant and I was wrapping up some [studio] cables,\u201d he said. \u201cChristine sat down at the piano and started playing this beautiful song. I stopped what I was doing and I turned around and watched her.
