Last week Karla Sof\u00eda Gasc\u00f3n<\/strong> received widespread backlash<\/a> when a number of racist and Islamaphobic posts that had been published on her X account were unearthed in a viral thread<\/a> from writer and podcaster Sarah Hagi.<\/strong> The resurfaced tweets\u2014which also covered topics such as George Floyd, Oscars diversity, and even Gasc\u00f3n\u2019s Emilia P\u00e9rez<\/em> co-star Selena Gomez<\/strong>\u2014promptly cast a shadow over her movie<\/a>, which is nominated for 13 Oscars\u2014the most of any film this year, as well as the most ever for a movie not in the English language. Just weeks ago, Gasc\u00f3n herself made history as the first out trans performer to get an Oscar nomination for best actress.<\/p>\n Soon after the old tweets went viral, Gasc\u00f3n issued a pair of statements. But while the first was apologetic, the second was a bit more combative\u2014and now Gasc\u00f3n has addressed the controversy once again, in an hourlong interview to CNN En Espa\u00f1ol. \u201cI believe I have been judged, I have been convicted and sacrificed and crucified and stoned without a trial and without the option to defend myself,\u201d Gasc\u00f3n said in the sit-down, which was translated from Spanish by CNN<\/a>. Vanity Fair<\/em> has learned that Netflix, Emilia P\u00e9rez<\/em>\u2019s distributor, was not aware of or involved in the booking of this interview.<\/p>\n The actor insisted on CNN that she will not withdraw from Oscar contention. \u201cI cannot step down from an Oscar nomination because I have not committed any crime, nor have I harmed anyone,\u201d said Gasc\u00f3n, according to CNN. \u201cI am neither racist nor anything that all these people have tried to make others believe I am.\u201d<\/p>\n When confronted with individual resurfaced tweets, Gasc\u00f3n said there were many she did not \u201crecognize,\u201d including a 2022 post where she allegedly refered to Gomez as a \u201crich rat.\u201d According to Gasc\u00f3n, \u201cIt\u2019s not mine, of course. I have never said anything about my colleague; I would never refer to her that way.\u201d<\/p>\n When asked about a tweet in which she referred to George Floyd\u2014who was murdered by police<\/a> in 2020\u2014as \u201ca drug addict and a hustler,\u201d Gasc\u00f3n said that she \u201cobviously\u201d supports the Black Lives Matter movement and meant to highlight others\u2019 racism in her tweet, according to translation by Deadline<\/a>. She uses \u201cirony, sarcasm and at times exaggeration,\u201d in her tweets, said Gasc\u00f3n, \u201cand of course I use a resource to talk in third person, if what I wrote was written by someone who thinks in a negative manner.\u201d The actor also said that she sees her social media as \u201cmore like a diary\u201d filled with \u201creflections, as opposed to something that can influence someone\u2014because before being here, my post was viewed by three people.\u201d<\/p>\n Gasc\u00f3n also addressed a tweet she wrote about the 2021 Oscars, in which she seemed to denigrate Daniel Kaluuya<\/strong> and Yuh-Jung Youn<\/strong>\u2019s respective wins: \u201cI didn\u2019t know if I was watching an Afro-Korean festival, a Black Lives Matter demonstration or the 8M,\u201d she wrote. Gasc\u00f3n called that commentary a \u201cstupidity,\u201d according to Deadline, and said that Kaluuya and Youn \u201csurely deserved those awards for all of their work and not for who they are.\u201d<\/p>\n Voting for the 2025 Oscars ends on February 18. Gasc\u00f3n has accused her detractors of conspiring to tank her movie\u2019s awards campaign before that deadline comes to pass. \u201cThey have dedicated themselves to searching, to put together all the things that I had said at a time that I had written\u2014most of which are false,\u201d Gasc\u00f3n said, per a translation by The Hollywood Reporter.<\/em><\/a> \u201cAnd they put them all together, and so it seems that she is a very bad person. And we remove her just when we can do the most damage\u2014right in the [Oscars] voting period.\u201d<\/p>\n It is unclear if Gasc\u00f3n\u2019s past actions have dashed awards hopes for Emilia P\u00e9rez<\/em>. But if they have, life will go on for the actor. \u201cI don\u2019t give a damn about awards,\u201d she said. \u201cWhat I do care about is the people that I represent, because of what I represent in this world.
