\nThe South Korean star previously battled stage 3 breast cancer, which she was diagnosed with in 1993, and her agency 1230culture has now confirmed the news she had died last Monday (01.27.25) after she went on to fight stomach cancer. <\/p>\n
\nThey said: \u201cApproximately three months ago, actress Lee Joo-shil\u2019s health declined, and she was diagnosed with stomach cancer after an examination from the hospital.\u201d<\/p>\n
\nLee died at her family home in Uijeongbu, South Korea and had been battling stomach cancer since her diagnosis late last year.<\/p>\n
\nBorn in 1944, Lee enjoyed a career spanning more than five decades, working across stage, film, television and Korean dramas. <\/p>\n
\nShe made her debut as a stage actress in 1965 and became a celebrated figure in South Korean theatre throughout the 1970s and 1980s.<\/p>\n
\nLee also starred in classic productions such as \u2018Death of a Salesman\u2019 and \u2018Macbeth\u2019, gaining critical acclaim for her performances.<\/p>\n
\nHer transition to the screen saw her appear in numerous films and television dramas, including \u2018Country Diary\u2019 in 1980 and the 2016 zombie thriller \u2018Train to Busan\u2019. <\/p>\n
\nMost recently, she played Park Mal-soon, the mother of Hwang Jun-ho, in the second season of \u2018Squid Game\u2019, which was released just over a month ago on 26 December.<\/p>\n
\nLee fought breast cancer for more than a decade and, during her treatment, completed a college degree. <\/p>\n
\nShe later earned a doctorate in public health from Wonkwang University in 2010.<\/p>\n
\nFollowing the news of her death, fans of \u2018Squid Game\u2019 took to social media to pay tribute. <\/p>\n
\nOne user said on X: \u201cOmg no my favourite grandma may her soul rest in peace.\u201d <\/p>\n
\nAnother fan called her \u201csuch a phenomenal actress\u201d, while a third said: \u201cVeteran actress Lee Joo-shil has sadly passed away after battling stomach cancer. Known for her role in \u2018Squid Game 2\u2019 and decades of iconic performances, she leaves behind a lasting legacy. May she rest in peace.\u201d<\/p>\n
\n\u2018Squid Game 2\u2019 was the highly anticipated follow-up to the globally successful first season created by Hwang Dong-hyuk, with Lee playing the mother of Wi Ha-joon\u2019s character in the series. <\/p>\n
\nThe original season was released on Netflix on 17 September 2021.<\/p>\n
