DeepSeek even claims that its R1 \u201creasoning\u201d model <a href=\"https:\/\/techcrunch.com\/2025\/01\/27\/deepseek-claims-its-reasoning-model-beats-openais-o1-on-certain-benchmarks\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">performs as well as OpenAI\u2019s o1 model<\/a> on key benchmarks. There\u2019s a lot of moving parts surrounding DeepSeek, so we\u2019ve put together <a href=\"https:\/\/techcrunch.com\/2025\/01\/28\/deepseek-everything-you-need-to-know-about-the-ai-chatbot-app\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">everything you need to know right here<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Perplexity has been sued in federal court<\/strong> for allegedly <a href=\"https:\/\/techcrunch.com\/2025\/01\/31\/ai-startup-perplexity-sued-for-alleged-trademark-infringement\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">violating another company\u2019s trademark.<\/a> Attorneys representing a company called Perplexity Solved Solutions accuse Perplexity of infringing on its trademark rights by using the brand \u201cPerplexity.\u201d The Texas company alleges that AI startup Perplexity began infringing on its trademark \u201cin or around\u201d August 2022 to promote its AI-powered search engine.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Google is issuing a \u201cvoluntary exit program\u201d<\/strong> for Android, Chrome, and Pixel employees this week, according to <a href=\"https:\/\/techcrunch.com\/2025\/01\/30\/google-issues-voluntary-exit-program-for-android-chrome-and-pixel-employees\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">an internal memo sent by Google SVP Rick Osterloh.<\/a> The voluntary severance program arrives less than a year after Google merged the separate teams into a single \u201cPlatform and Devices\u201d division, overseen by Osterloh.\u00a0<\/p>\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n<p class=\"has-text-align-center wp-block-paragraph\"><em>This is TechCrunch\u2019s Week in Review, where we recap the week\u2019s biggest news.
