The unexpected moment, which quickly went viral, saw the 57-year-old actor don his now iconic green Buddy costume from the 2003 holiday hit Elf \u2013\u00a0but with the twist he wasn\u2019t the innocent, cheerfully naive character beloved from the film as he sat scowling, sipping beer and holding a cigarette. <\/p>\n
He\u2019s now admitted to People about the moment: \u201cSome people were not too happy.\u201d<\/p>\n
Will added: \u201cThey thought, \u2018Please be true to the character. That was not cool.\u2019\u201d<\/p>\n
But the actor explained Buddy was simply having \u201ca bad day\u201d, joking the character had decided to attend the Los Angeles Kings vs Philadelphia Flyers game while indulging in beer and cigarettes.<\/p>\n
\nHe said about how he got the idea on a whim \u201c(My family are) season ticket holders for the L.A. Kings. We have seats right on the glass, which are amazing. <\/p>\n
\n\u201cI told my wife, \u2018Over the break, it would be funny if I just got a Buddy the Elf costume and didn\u2019t shave for like a week. I\u2019m just gonna sit there for a period and see how people react’.” <\/p>\n
\nDuring a chat with People alongside actress Reese Witherspoon, with whom Will stars alongside in the upcoming comedy \u2018You\u2019re Cordially Invited\u2019, the actor opened up about the Buddy costume.<\/p>\n
\nReese asked him: \u201cWhere\u2019d you get your Buddy costume? Amazon?\u201d <\/p>\n
\nWill replied: \u201cI did.\u201d<\/p>\n
\nThe actor also joked about owning other costumes from films such as \u2018Anchorman: The Legend of Ron Burgundy\u2019 and \u2018Blades of Glory\u2019, saying he has them \u201cbox framed\u201d.<\/p>\n
