James Van Der Beek<\/strong><\/a> is navigating his recent cancer diagnosis with the help of one special person: his dad.<\/p>\n

The Dawson\u2019s Creek<\/em> star thanked his dad, James William Van Der Beek, for his support in an emotional message shared via Instagram on Saturday, January 25. \u201cThe way you have shown up when I\u2019ve been down and out this year \u2013 without us having to ask, without the expectation of even a thank you\u2026 has been not just life-saving, but life-affirming,\u201d Van Der Beek wrote, in honor of his father\u2019s birthday.<\/p>\n

\n\t\t\tJames Van Der Beek is paying tribute to his loved ones amid his battle with Stage III colorectal cancer battle. Reflecting on his \u201ctough year\u201d after receiving the diagnosis, the actor, 47, showed gratitude for his wife, Kimberly, 42,\u00a0 their six children (Olivia, 14, Joshua, 12, Annabel, 10, Emilia, 8, Gwen, 6, and Jeremiah, 3) [\u2026]\t\t<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

\u201cMoving onto the ranch for when I\u2019m away for treatment. Making lunches, making fires for @vanderkimberly, driving kids, even taking care of the dogs and chickens (neither of which you ever wanted and would just as soon never have had \ud83e\udd23),\u201d he continued.<\/p>\n

The actor went on to thank his father for being there for him \u201cemotionally\u201d as he\u2019s \u201cmoved through everything cancer brings up.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cI know it\u2019s outside your comfort zone, but especially since Mom died, you have come through for me again and again and again in ways that I didn\u2019t even know how much I needed,\u201d he added. \u201cWatching you evolve, seeing what kind of man and father you are\u2026 gives me more confidence in myself than I could ever express. I feel so proud and lucky to have come from you. Thank you for being the best. Ever. Period. And I will keep my promise that we won\u2019t ever ask you to change Jeremiah\u2019s diapers.\u201d<\/p>\n

The actor announced<\/a> he was diagnosed with stage 3 colorectal cancer in November 2024. \u201cI\u2019ve been privately dealing with this diagnosis and have been taking steps to resolve it, with the support of my incredible family,\u201d he explained at the time. \u201cThere\u2019s reason for optimism, and I\u2019m feeling good.\u201d<\/p>\n

The actor has been married to Kimberly Van Der Beek since 2010. The pair have six children together.<\/p>\n

Their daughter Annabel shares a birthday with her grandfather. The actor also wrote the 11-year-old her own message via Instagram<\/a> on Saturday.<\/p>\n

\u201cThere are sweet souls\u2026 and then there\u2019s you. The softest, most empathetic heart I know. It\u2019s been a really tough year to be so sensitive, and so connected to me, who\u2019s not been well in so many moments \u2013 which I know you know without my even having to be in the room,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n
