Oracle and a group of investors that includes Microsoft are in talks to take over TikTok\u2019s global operations, reports NPR<\/em><\/a>. <\/em>The deal, which the White House is reportedly negotiating, would see ByteDance keeping a minority stake in TikTok while \u201cthe app\u2019s algorithm, data collection and software updates will be overseen by Oracle.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/div>\n Oracle\u2019s server network already provides the bulk of TikTok\u2019s backbone, and under the deal, the company would \u201ceffectively monitor and provide oversight with what is going on with TikTok,\u201d according to one of NPR\u2019s anonymous sources, who added that the agreement\u2019s goal is to \u201cminimize Chinese ownership.\u201d <\/p>\n<\/div>\n Microsoft\u2019s reported involvement isn\u2019t clear beyond that it is \u201cengaged in the talks.\u201d The company was also in the mix with Oracle and Walmart in a 2020 bid to take over TikTok that Microsoft co-founder Bill Gates had called<\/a> \u201ca poison[ed] chalice.\u201d Walmart reportedly isn\u2019t involved this time around \u201cafter balking at the estimated price\u201d of the app.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n News of the talks comes after President Trump issued an executive order<\/a> giving TikTok and others a 75-day reprieve from any enforcement action related to the United States\u2019 requirement that ByteDance divest from TikTok. Trump had previously floated the possibility<\/a> of a \u201cjoint venture\u201d in which the US owns 50 percent of the company. <\/p>\n<\/div>\n
