Morris Chestnut<\/strong> is playing the newest iteration of John Watson in CBS\u2019 Watson<\/em>, and says fans can expect to see more than a few low-key references to Sir Arthur Conan Doyle<\/strong>\u2018s Sherlock Holmes<\/em> book series.<\/p>\n

\u201cI couldn\u2019t catch them all because once we\u2019re in production, there were so many of the ones that were very pertinent to the story line,\u201d Chestnut, 56, exclusively told Us Weekly<\/em> ahead of the show\u2019s premiere on Sunday, January 26. \u201cI was able to ask a lot of questions. And after I was reading some of Sherlock Holmes after we wrapped, I was like, \u2018Oh.\u2019 Some things came to me that I didn\u2019t realize at the time.\u201d<\/p>\n

Chestnut appreciated the medical drama<\/a>\u2018s \u201cprofound examination into the mythology.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201c[In the show], Watson gave up the life that he had and ended up losing his wife to go solve mysteries and crimes with Holmes. Now that Holmes is gone, he allowed Watson a second lease on life by providing this clinic,\u201d he teased. \u201cBut throughout the first season, that\u2019s one of the things that Watson is dealing with. He\u2019s dealing with who he is without Holmes at this stage of his life with everything that he\u2019s lost.\u201d<\/p>\n

Chestnut continued: \u201cHe is just trying to rebuild a relationship with his wife, trying to rebuild the clinic and his medical practice. So throughout the first season, Watson questions [who he is without Holmes] quite a bit.\u201d<\/p>\n

Based on Doyle\u2019s Sherlock Holmes<\/em> stories, Watson takes place six months after<\/a> James Moriarty kills the legendary detective. Watson must come to terms with the loss of his best friend and partner by resuming his medical career as the head of a clinic dedicated to treating rare disorders.<\/p>\n

\u201cI did not consult any other [past] Watson [performances]. I did of course read some of the books and I looked at some of the other projects out there. For me, I felt that this character was different because the other Watsons are primarily not the focus,\u201d Chestnut explained to Us<\/em> of his performance in the upcoming series. \u201cThe story is always told from Sherlock\u2019s perspective. So this story is being told from Watson\u2019s perspective in a very specific way. We\u2019re part of the mythology, but the clinic and being a detective is not part of the mythology.\u201d<\/p>\n

CBS offered Watson the \u201cfreedom\u201d to \u201creally explore\u201d a different take<\/a> on the Sherlock Holmes<\/em> franchise. Chestnut, who also serves as an executive producer on the show, says he had a \u201cvery collaborative\u201d experience with creator Craig Sweeny<\/strong> after his work on Elementary.<\/p>\n

HBO\u2019s The Pitt, which premieres in January, marks Noah Wyle\u2018s return to medical dramas 15 years after his role as John Carter on ER. The series is described as \u201ca realistic examination of the [\u2026]\t\t<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

\u201cCraig and I communicated quite a bit for the character,\u201d the actor recalled before referencing Sweeny\u2019s past contemporary series based on Sherlock Holmes<\/em>. \u201cCraig is so well read in the mythology that there\u2019s nothing that you can say about it that he doesn\u2019t know. I feel we\u2019re very ambitious [in] taking on this phenomenon in the way that we do. And having someone like Craig as an overall resource was tremendous.\u201d<\/p>\n

Watson is the second CBS series<\/a> to take inspiration from the Holmes stories. Elementary<\/em>, which aired from 2012 to 2019, starred Lucy Liu as Dr. Joan Watson<\/strong>. Liu\u2019s iteration was a former surgeon hired by Sherlock\u2019s (Jonny Lee Miller<\/strong>) father to help him in his<\/a> rehabilitation as a recovering drug addict and former consultant to Scotland Yard.<\/p>\n
