The <a href=\"https:\/\/www.gov.uk\/government\/news\/cma-secures-important-changes-from-google-to-tackle-fake-reviews\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">UK\u2019s Competition and Markets Authority (CMA) announced<\/a> on Friday that Google has agreed to improve its processes for detecting and removing fake reviews, and will take action against the businesses and reviewers that post them.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<p class=\"duet--article--dangerously-set-cms-markup duet--article--standard-paragraph mb-20 font-fkroman text-18 leading-160 -tracking-1 selection:bg-franklin-20 dark:text-white dark:selection:bg-blurple [&amp;_a:hover]:shadow-highlight-franklin dark:[&amp;_a:hover]:shadow-highlight-blurple [&amp;_a]:shadow-underline-black dark:[&amp;_a]:shadow-underline-white\">This includes deactivating the ability to add new reviews for businesses found to be using fake reviews, and deleting all existing reviews for at least six months if they repeatedly engage in suspicious review activity. Google will also place prominent \u201cwarning alerts\u201d on the Google profiles of businesses using fake reviews to help consumers be more aware of potentially misleading feedback. Individuals who repeatedly post fake or misleading reviews on UK business pages will be banned and have their review history deleted, even if they\u2019re located in another country.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<p class=\"duet--article--dangerously-set-cms-markup duet--article--standard-paragraph mb-20 font-fkroman text-18 leading-160 -tracking-1 selection:bg-franklin-20 dark:text-white dark:selection:bg-blurple [&amp;_a:hover]:shadow-highlight-franklin dark:[&amp;_a:hover]:shadow-highlight-blurple [&amp;_a]:shadow-underline-black dark:[&amp;_a]:shadow-underline-white\">Google is required to report to the CMA over the next three years to ensure it\u2019s complying with the agreement.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<p class=\"duet--article--dangerously-set-cms-markup duet--article--standard-paragraph mb-20 font-fkroman text-18 leading-160 -tracking-1 selection:bg-franklin-20 dark:text-white dark:selection:bg-blurple [&amp;_a:hover]:shadow-highlight-franklin dark:[&amp;_a:hover]:shadow-highlight-blurple [&amp;_a]:shadow-underline-black dark:[&amp;_a]:shadow-underline-white\">\u201cThe changes we\u2019ve secured from Google ensure robust processes are in place, so people can have confidence in reviews and make the best possible choices,\u201d CMA chief executive Sarah Cardell said in a statement. \u201cThis is a matter of fairness \u2013 for both business and consumers \u2013 and we encourage the entire sector to take note.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<p class=\"duet--article--dangerously-set-cms-markup duet--article--standard-paragraph mb-20 font-fkroman text-18 leading-160 -tracking-1 selection:bg-franklin-20 dark:text-white dark:selection:bg-blurple [&amp;_a:hover]:shadow-highlight-franklin dark:[&amp;_a:hover]:shadow-highlight-blurple [&amp;_a]:shadow-underline-black dark:[&amp;_a]:shadow-underline-white\">Google made <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theverge.com\/2024\/9\/26\/24254882\/google-maps-removing-fake-business-reviews-warning-message\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">similar changes to reviews in Maps<\/a> last year, saying that contributions \u201cshould reflect a genuine experience at a place or business.\u201d However, those changes apply globally while Google\u2019s commitment to improving reviews across all its properties appears to just apply to the UK for now.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<p class=\"duet--article--dangerously-set-cms-markup duet--article--standard-paragraph mb-20 font-fkroman text-18 leading-160 -tracking-1 selection:bg-franklin-20 dark:text-white dark:selection:bg-blurple [&amp;_a:hover]:shadow-highlight-franklin dark:[&amp;_a:hover]:shadow-highlight-blurple [&amp;_a]:shadow-underline-black dark:[&amp;_a]:shadow-underline-white\">The changes to reviews follow a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.gov.uk\/cma-cases\/online-reviews#cma-opens-formal-probe-into-amazon-and-google-over-reviews\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">CMA investigation launched against Google and Amazon in 2021<\/a> over concerns the companies had violated consumer protection laws by not doing enough to tackle fake reviews on their platforms.
