The surprises on ABC\u2019s Shifting Gears<\/em> just keep coming with Tim Allen<\/strong><\/a> set to reunite with his Last Man Standing<\/em> costar \u2014 and onscreen wife \u2014 Nancy Travis<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

Us Weekly<\/em> can exclusively reveal that Travis, 63, has been cast in a guest role<\/a> on an upcoming episode of the hit ABC sitcom. The actress plays a spirited widow named Charlotte, who connects with Allen\u2019s character, Matt.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe Nancy Travis story is really, really clever,\u201d Allen, 71, exclusively told Us<\/em> before reflecting on his offscreen friendship with Travis. \u201cNancy Travis once told me [something] after I called her during Last Man Standing<\/em>. I said, \u2018Have you talked to the girls [who play our daughters] over the summer?\u2019 Then there\u2019s this long pause and she goes, \u2018Tim, these aren\u2019t our daughters and I\u2019m not actually your wife.’\u201d<\/p>\n

He quipped: \u201cShe was so wonderful about it because sometimes when they were having trouble on the show, I\u2019d go, \u2018How do you think they feel?\u2019 And she would respond, \u2018Tim, they\u2019re actors. We just read [what is on the page but] she\u2019s not really that sad.’\u201d<\/p>\n

The Shifting Gears<\/em> reunion marks the first time<\/a> Allen and Travis will share the screen since ABC\u2019s Last Man Standing<\/em>. On the sitcom, which aired from 2011 to 2021, Allen and Travis played a fictional couple: Mike and Vanessa Baxter.<\/p>\n

After Last Man Standing<\/em> came to an end, Allen returned to the comedy space with Shifting Gears, which premiered earlier this month. The show follows Allen\u2019s character, who is a widow, as he reconnects with his estranged daughter, Riley (Kat Dennings<\/strong>).<\/a><\/p>\n

Allen previously told Us<\/em> he was intrigued<\/a> by the shakeup.<\/p>\n

\u201cFrom the very beginning, [the creative team has said] that we\u2019ve never seen Tim Allen in a sitcom with a romantic interest. And I said, \u2018Well, I\u2019ve just lost my wife so I don\u2019t see it.\u2019 So I love where we are,\u201d he noted. \u201cI said, \u2018If it happens over time and happens organically with two people that do not get along then it is OK. I just am really cautious about this. I just want it to happen where it\u2019s organic and proper.\u201d<\/p>\n

In addition to Last Man Standing<\/em>, Allen was also the lead on Home Improvement<\/em>, which ran from 1991 to 1999. The extensive experience allowed the actor the freedom to try something new this time<\/a> around.<\/p>\n
