There\u2019s no crazier jury duty experience than Amazon Freevee\u2019s\u00a0Jury Duty\u00a0<\/i>series and its comedic cast of actors reacting to unsuspecting Ronald Gladden<\/strong>.<\/p>\n The comedy, which premiered on Amazon Freevee earlier this month, is filmed mockumentary-style as a group of prospective jurors go through the voir dire selection process and a civil trial<\/a>. While early episodes appear like\u00a0Jury Duty\u00a0<\/i>is a reality TV show chronicling jury selection<\/a>, most of the cast are actually actors except for one participant, who is unaware that everything is fictionalized.<\/p>\n Gladden, for his part, is a contractor by trade, who answered a vague Craigslist ad<\/a> to participate in a documentary about jury duty<\/a>. Little did he know that his fellow jurors are all performers, including James Marsden<\/strong><\/a> as a sensationalized version of himself.<\/p>\n \u201cWe called him The Hero throughout the whole thing because we were creating a hero\u2019s journey for somebody,\u201d the\u00a027 Dresses\u00a0<\/i><\/a>actor, 49, recalled of Gladden\u00a0during an April interview with IndieWire<\/a>. \u201cIf I saw any signs that he was tortured or that he was uncomfortable, I was ready to say, \u2018I\u2019m out. Pull the plug.\u2019 And I was serious about it. I can\u2019t sleep at night if I know that I\u2019m making somebody, who doesn\u2019t know that any of this is fake, uncomfortable in any way.\u201d<\/p>\n He continued at the time: \u201cThe challenge for me was that I was a point person for Ronald. It was essential that I had his trust<\/a>, that we had good banter, that there was a friendship there. So, whenever I did something that he didn\u2019t like or that he thought was really sh\u2014ty behavior, I would then have to pull it back a bit and just be normal James to get back in his good graces. And then he would hopefully think, \u2018OK. There\u2019s a nice guy in there<\/a>, he just kind of got carried away in that moment.\u2019\u201d<\/p>\n While the\u00a0Jury Duty\u00a0<\/i>cast \u2014 including Marsden and\u00a0Sex Lives of College Girls<\/i>\u2019 Mekki Leeper<\/strong><\/a> \u2014 had a rough script to follow, Gladden completely improvised his scenes<\/a> based on spur-of-the-moment reactions to the over-the-top situations.<\/p>\n \u201cI was just under the impression that this was going to be a behind-the-scenes look \u2026 or what it was like for jury duty,\u201d the construction worker recalled to\u00a0Access Hollywood\u00a0<\/i><\/a>in April. \u201cSo, I signed up for what I thought was a documentary. I didn\u2019t really know what was going on until the end.\u201d<\/p>\n Though Gladden was unaware that he was essentially being pranked<\/a> on the Freevee sitcom, Marsden gushed that his TV costar made \u201ccomedy gold\u201d without trying.<\/p>\n \u201c[Ronald was] like, \u2018Do I recognize you? I didn\u2019t know from what?\u2019\u201d the\u00a0Westworld<\/i><\/a>\u00a0alum recalled of the pair\u2019s first\u00a0Jury Duty<\/i>\u00a0scene during an April appearance on the \u201cChicks in the Office\u201d<\/a> podcast. \u201cAnd I was like, \u2018Yeah, yeah, yeah, I\u2019ve been in a lot of stuff\u2019 and then I saw someone who was actually wearing socks that looked like it said \u2018Sonic\u2019 on it. Again, this is all just on the fly. \u2026 I\u2019m just trying to think of a way in to talk about, you know, my stuff.\u201d<\/p>\n Gladden, for his part, replied that he didn\u2019t know Marsden was in\u00a0Sonic The Hedgehog <\/i><\/a>before retorting that he heard the 2020 film received bad reviews. \u201c[It\u2019s]\u00a0comedy gold,\u201d the\u00a0Hairspray\u00a0<\/i>actor gushed on the podcast. \u201cAnd then, I get to go, \u2018Yeah, I mean a lot of people saw it, you should check it out, and then the next day he came in [and said], \u2018Oh man, I\u2019m sorry. I saw the movie last night.
