The Brutalist <\/i>director Brady Corbet<\/strong> is defending the use of AI to alter Adrien Brody<\/strong><\/a> and Felicity Jones<\/strong><\/a>\u2019 Hungarian accents in his acclaimed film.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cAdrien and Felicity\u2019s performances are completely their own,\u201d Corbet, 36, said in a statement to Variety<\/i><\/span><\/a> on Monday, January 20. \u201cThey worked for months with dialect coach Tanera Marshall<\/strong> to perfect their accents. Innovative Respeecher technology was used in Hungarian language dialogue editing only, specifically to refine certain vowels and letters for accuracy. No English language was changed.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

The filmmaker added: \u201cThis was a manual process, done by our sound team and Respeecher in post-production. The aim was to preserve the authenticity of Adrien and Felicity\u2019s performances in another language, not to replace or alter them and done with the utmost respect for the craft.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

The Brutalist<\/i> stars Brody, 51, as L\u00e1szl\u00f3 T\u00f3th, a Hungarian-Jewish architect and Holocaust survivor who emigrated to America following World War II. Jones, 41, plays T\u00f3th\u2019s wife.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Controversy arose after RedShark News<\/i>, which covers tech, published an interview<\/span><\/a> with the film\u2019s editor, D\u00e1vid Jancs\u00f3<\/strong>, on January 11. In that interview, Jancs\u00f3 said that tools from Respeecher, a Ukrainian software company, were used to make Brody and Jones\u2019 Hungarian speech more authentic.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cWe coached [them] and they did a fabulous job but we also wanted to perfect it so that not even locals will spot any difference,\u201d the Hungarian editor told the outlet, explaining that he recorded his voice into the AI program, as did the two leads.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cMost of their Hungarian dialogue has a part of me talking in there,\u201d <\/span>Jancs\u00f3 acknowledged. \u201c<\/span>We were very careful about keeping their performances. It\u2019s mainly just replacing letters here and there.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

Jancs\u00f3 told RedShark News<\/i> that generative AI was incorporated into the end of the film, which showed architectural drawings from Brody\u2019s character. However, Corbet explained in his statement Monday: \u201c[Production designer] Judy Becker<\/strong> and her team did not use AI to create or render any of the buildings. All images were hand-drawn by artists.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n
