Julia Stiles<\/strong><\/a> is known as a former teen film queen \u2014 and perhaps her most famous character is Kat Stratford from 10 Things I Hate About You<\/em><\/a>.<\/p>\n

The smart, strong-willed high school feminist always spoke her mind and tried to avoid what others thought about her in the process. Stiles, 43, believes she\u2019d still be doing the same today.<\/p>\n

When asked where she thinks Kat would be now, Stiles told Vogue<\/em><\/a>, \u201cHopefully, a lot happier out of high school. She\u2019s either touring in a rock band or lives in a cabin in Costa Rica, makes her own sourdough bread, and has no screens around her. And, she\u2019s totally surfing.\u201d<\/p>\n

In the 1999 coming-of-age film, Stiles and the late Heath Ledger<\/strong> played star-crossed lovers Kat and Patrick Verona, respectively. The pair reluctantly fall in love with each other amid a backdrop of high school angst. Joseph Gordon-Levitt<\/strong> (Cameron James), Gabrielle Union<\/strong> (Chastity), Allison Janney<\/strong> (Ms. Perky), David Krumholtz<\/strong> (Michael Eckman), Larisa Oleynik<\/strong> (Bianca Stratford), Andrew Keegan<\/strong> (Joey Donner) and Susan May Pratt<\/strong> (Mandella) made up the star-studded supporting cast.<\/p>\n

\n\t\t\tThe beloved 10 Things I Hate About You made its debut on March 31, 1999, and more than two decades later, fans are still talking about the romantic comedy. Julia Stiles and Heath Ledger played star-crossed lovers Kat Stratford and Patrick Verona, respectively. The pair reluctantly fell in love with each other amid a backdrop [\u2026]\t\t<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

When recalling what it was like to work with Ledger \u2014 who died at age 28<\/a> on January 22, 2008, following an accidental drug overdose \u2014 Stiles said the Oscar winner was \u201csuch a bright light.<\/a>\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cHe was such an energetic, kind force. He was very magnetic, very charismatic, and we all had a great time working on that film,\u201d she told Vogue<\/em>. \u201cI really am grateful that he was so kind to me. For my first experience being the lead in a big studio movie, and, particularly, in romantic situations, you have to really feel comfortable with the person that you\u2019re acting opposite, and he very much made me comfortable.\u201d<\/p>\n

People are still as obsessed with their partnership and the Gil Junger<\/strong>-directed movie in general. Twenty-five years after its release, Stiles thinks fans still hold the film in high regard because \u201cthe writing was so good.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cIt was a really whip-smart team of female writers, Karen McCullah<\/strong> and Kirsten Smith<\/strong>, who in many ways \u2014 like Kat Stratford \u2014 didn\u2019t bend their wit, humor and observation to trends,\u201d Stiles told Vogue<\/em>. \u201cThey were very much pioneering, and they were like, \u2018This is our personality and our sense of humor and that\u2019s what the movie is going to be,\u2019 and that authenticity, I think, is what audiences respond to.\u201d<\/p>\n

After the success of 10 Things<\/em>, Stiles went on to star in Down to You<\/em>, Save the Last Dance<\/em>, O<\/em>, The Prince and Me<\/em>, and the Bourne Identity<\/em> franchise. Nowadays, she\u2019s a busy mom of three kids, whom she shares with husband Preston J. Cook<\/strong>, on top of being an actress, writer and director.<\/p>\n

She recently released her directorial debut, the rom-com Wish You Were Here<\/em>, starring Isabelle Fuhrman<\/strong> and Mena Massoud<\/strong>, and based on the 2017 novel by Ren\u00e9e Carlino<\/strong>.<\/p>\n
