DJI\u2019s software would automatically stop you from flying over runways, power plants, public emergencies like wildfires, and the White House.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"duet--article--article-body-component\">\n<p class=\"duet--article--dangerously-set-cms-markup duet--article--standard-paragraph mb-20 font-fkroman text-18 leading-160 -tracking-1 selection:bg-franklin-20 dark:text-white dark:selection:bg-blurple [&amp;_a:hover]:shadow-highlight-franklin dark:[&amp;_a:hover]:shadow-highlight-blurple [&amp;_a]:shadow-underline-black dark:[&amp;_a]:shadow-underline-white\">But confusingly, amidst the greatest US <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theverge.com\/24324635\/new-jersey-drones-rumors-nj-news\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">outpouring of drone distrust<\/a> in years, and an incident of a <a href=\"https:\/\/dronedj.com\/2025\/01\/13\/dji-mini-drone-la-fire\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">DJI drone operator hindering LA wildfire fighting efforts<\/a>, DJI is getting rid of its strong geofence. DJI will no longer enforce \u201cNo-Fly Zones,\u201d instead only offering a dismissible warning \u2014 meaning only common sense, empathy, and the fear of getting caught by authorities will prevent people from flying where they shouldn\u2019t.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"duet--article--article-body-component\">\n<p class=\"duet--article--dangerously-set-cms-markup duet--article--standard-paragraph mb-20 font-fkroman text-18 leading-160 -tracking-1 selection:bg-franklin-20 dark:text-white dark:selection:bg-blurple [&amp;_a:hover]:shadow-highlight-franklin dark:[&amp;_a:hover]:shadow-highlight-blurple [&amp;_a]:shadow-underline-black dark:[&amp;_a]:shadow-underline-white\">In a blog post, DJI <a href=\"https:\/\/viewpoints.dji.com\/blog\/geo-system-update\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">characterizes this<\/a> as \u201cplacing control back in the hands of the drone operators.\u201d DJI suggests that technologies like <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theverge.com\/2020\/12\/28\/22203398\/faa-remote-id-rules-location-night-over-people\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Remote ID<\/a>, which publicly broadcasts the location of a drone and their operator during flight, are \u201cproviding authorities with the tools needed to enforce existing rules,\u201d DJI global policy head Adam Welsh tells <em>The Verge.<\/em><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"duet--article--article-body-component\">\n<p class=\"duet--article--dangerously-set-cms-markup duet--article--standard-paragraph mb-20 font-fkroman text-18 leading-160 -tracking-1 selection:bg-franklin-20 dark:text-white dark:selection:bg-blurple [&amp;_a:hover]:shadow-highlight-franklin dark:[&amp;_a:hover]:shadow-highlight-blurple [&amp;_a]:shadow-underline-black dark:[&amp;_a]:shadow-underline-white\">But it turns out the DJI drone that <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theverge.com\/2025\/1\/10\/24340524\/drone-collision-grounds-super-scooper-aircraft-la-wildfires\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">damaged a Super Scooper airplane<\/a> fighting the Los Angeles wildfires <a href=\"https:\/\/abc7.com\/post\/california-wildfires-fbi-shares-photos-pieces-drone-damaged-super-scooper-aircraft-flying-palisades-fire\/15792412\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">was a sub-250-gram model<\/a> that may not require Remote ID to operate, and the FBI expects it will have to \u201cwork backwards through investigative means\u201d to figure out who flew it there. <\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"duet--article--article-body-component\">\n<p class=\"duet--article--dangerously-set-cms-markup duet--article--standard-paragraph mb-20 font-fkroman text-18 leading-160 -tracking-1 selection:bg-franklin-20 dark:text-white dark:selection:bg-blurple [&amp;_a:hover]:shadow-highlight-franklin dark:[&amp;_a:hover]:shadow-highlight-blurple [&amp;_a]:shadow-underline-black dark:[&amp;_a]:shadow-underline-white\">DJI voluntarily created its geofencing feature, so it makes a certain degree of sense that the company would get rid of it now that the US government no longer seems to appreciate its help, is <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theverge.com\/2024\/10\/16\/24272188\/dji-blames-us-customs-block-import-some-drones\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">blocking some of its drone imports<\/a>, calls DJI <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theverge.com\/2024\/10\/19\/24274153\/dji-sues-us-dod-chinese-military-company\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">a \u201cChinese Military Company,\u201d<\/a> and has started the countdown clock on <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theverge.com\/2024\/12\/18\/24324702\/dji-drone-ban-ndaa-trump\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">a de facto import ban<\/a>.  <\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"duet--article--article-body-component\">\n<p class=\"duet--article--dangerously-set-cms-markup duet--article--standard-paragraph mb-20 font-fkroman text-18 leading-160 -tracking-1 selection:bg-franklin-20 dark:text-white dark:selection:bg-blurple [&amp;_a:hover]:shadow-highlight-franklin dark:[&amp;_a:hover]:shadow-highlight-blurple [&amp;_a]:shadow-underline-black dark:[&amp;_a]:shadow-underline-white\">\u201cThe FAA does not require geofencing from drone manufacturers,\u201d FAA spokesperson Ian Gregor confirms to <em>The Verge. <\/em><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"duet--article--article-body-component\">\n<p class=\"duet--article--dangerously-set-cms-markup duet--article--standard-paragraph mb-20 font-fkroman text-18 leading-160 -tracking-1 selection:bg-franklin-20 dark:text-white dark:selection:bg-blurple [&amp;_a:hover]:shadow-highlight-franklin dark:[&amp;_a:hover]:shadow-highlight-blurple [&amp;_a]:shadow-underline-black dark:[&amp;_a]:shadow-underline-white\">But former DJI head of global policy, Brendan Schulman, doesn\u2019t seem to think this is a move for the better. If not, why not?\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"duet--article--article-body-component\">\n<blockquote class=\"duet--article--blockquote jzbdts2\">\n<p class=\"duet--article--dangerously-set-cms-markup jzbdtsa jzbdts0\">The geofencing system that was in place prior was a voluntary safety measure introduced by\u00a0DJI\u00a0over 10 years ago when mass-produced small drones were a new entrant to the airspace, and regulators needed time to establish rules for their safe use. <\/p>\n<p class=\"duet--article--dangerously-set-cms-markup jzbdtsa jzbdts0\">Since then, the FAA has introduced Remote ID requirements, which means that drones flown in the U.S. must broadcast the equivalent of a \u201clicense plate\u201d for drones.
