Head coach Marcus Freeman<\/strong><\/a> made a meaningful change in his personal life after his professional journey took him to Notre Dame.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Less than a year after becoming the head football coach at the South Bend, Indiana university in December 2021, Freeman, 39, made the decision to convert to Catholicism.<\/span><\/p>\n

During a media call in September 2022, Freeman called it \u201ca family decision, a personal decision.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

According to the South Bend Tribune<\/i><\/a>, Freeman was raised in the Christian and Korean church traditions \u2014 Freeman\u2019s mother, Chong<\/strong>, was born in South Korea \u2014 and his wife, Joanna Freeman<\/strong>, and their children were already practicing Catholics.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

\n\t\t\tCourtesy of Marcus Freeman\/Instagram Notre Dame head coach Marcus Freeman has quite the impressive squad off the field, too.\u00a0 Freeman, 38, who became the head football coach at Notre Dame in December 2021, married his wife, Joanna Freeman, in 2010. The couple met during Marcus\u2019 time at The Ohio State University, where Marcus was a [\u2026]\t\t<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

Marcus and Joanna, who got married in 2010, share six kids: son Vinny<\/strong>, 17, daughter Siena<\/strong>, 12, son Gino<\/strong>, 11, son Nico<\/strong>, 9, daughter Capri<\/strong>, 7, and son Rocco<\/strong>, 6.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cI tried to keep it as private as I could,\u201d Freeman said of his religious conversion. \u201cObviously, when you\u2019re head coach at Notre Dame, nothing is private.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

The development was first announced in the bulletin of Freeman\u2019s church, Saint Pius X Catholic Church in Granger, Indiana.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cWelcome to our newest Catholic, Marcus Freeman,\u201d the bulletin read, which was obtained by the Tribune<\/i>. \u201c[Father] Bill recently concelebrated in a Mass where Marcus Freeman was received into the Catholic Church. After preparing with [Father] Nate Wills,\u00a0 C.S.C., chaplain of the Notre Dame football team, Marcus made a profession of faith, was confirmed, and received his First Holy Communion.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

The message added, \u201cPlease pray for Marcus, and his family, as they celebrate and continue this journey in faith!\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

Before he converted, Freeman reinstated the tradition of pre-game Mass for the Notre Dame football team for the first time in 11 years.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cWhat better time is there to go have Mass?\u201d he asked the National Catholic Register<\/i><\/a> in August 2022. \u201cWhat better time to be able to really be on the edge of your seat to get every word that comes out of the priest\u2019s mouth and to be as close to God as you can?\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

Freeman added, \u201cThat\u2019s important for me. I want our guys to wonder about what it means to embrace Jesus Christ.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

\n\t\t\tNotre Dame football head coach Marcus Freeman has had his wife, Joanna Freeman, by his side for every step of his gridiron journey.\u00a0 Marcus, 38, and Joanna met during Marcus\u2019 time at The Ohio State University, where he was a star linebacker from 2004 to 2008. According to Yahoo! Sports, the two were introduced by [\u2026]\t\t<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

The coach and his program are currently preparing to face The Ohio State University in the College Football Playoff National Championship on Monday, January 20 at Mercedes-Benz Stadium in Atlanta, attempting to secure Notre Dame\u2019s first national title since 1988.<\/span><\/p>\n
