Fans will likely never forget Bill Skarsg\u00e5rd<\/strong>\u2019s full frontal moment as the decrepit Count Orlok in Nosferatu<\/em> \u2013 but the creative team behind the scenes remain just as haunted.<\/p>\n

Heavy prosthetics are nothing new to Skarsg\u00e5rd, 34, as he\u2019s transformed into various levels of haunting creatures in films like It<\/em><\/a> and The Crow.<\/em> Adding a prosthetic penis onto his body for his role as Count Orlok in Nosferatu,<\/em> however, was a new experience \u2014 one that created a memorable moment not only for Skarsg\u00e5rd\u2019s character on screen but for costar Nicholas Hoult<\/strong><\/a>\u2019s Thomas Hutter and the film\u2019s creative team.<\/p>\n

\u201cWith [Nick\u2019s character] Thomas, they had a scene where Orlok was sucking his blood and the penis kept rubbing on his leg and he didn\u2019t know how to react to him,\u201d Traci Loader<\/strong>, Nosferatu<\/em>\u2019s lead makeup designer, told Us Weekly<\/em> in an exclusive interview.<\/p>\n

\u201cI don\u2019t think you\u2019ll forget that moment,\u201d the film\u2019s hair department head, Suzanne Stokes-Munton<\/strong>, added, to which Loader replied, \u201cNo, that will live on forever!\u201d<\/p>\n

\n\t\t\tBill Skarsg\u00e5rd knows how to get into character by drastically transforming into several spooky roles throughout his career. Skarsg\u00e5rd cemented his role as a scream king when he portrayed Pennywise in the It film franchise. His filmography, however, was already filled with other horror projects including Netflix\u2019s Hemlock Grove. The actor, who played Roman, costarred [\u2026]\t\t<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

Audiences get their own view of the prosthetic appendage in the third act when Thomas attempts to flee Orlok\u2019s castle after realizing he\u2019s being fed on by the ancient vampire. As he finds his way to the cellar, he attempts to stake a sleeping Orlok but wakes him instead. As Thomas runs for his life, Orlok rises out of his sarcophagus, exposing himself free of clothing.<\/p>\n

As for why the prosthetic penis was necessary to filming in the first place, head of prosthetic makeup effects designer David White<\/strong> \u2014 who created the prop \u2014 gave Us<\/em> some insight into the scene.<\/p>\n

\u201c[Bill] knew it was coming, and as soon as I saw that shot in the frame, I thought, \u2018Oh no, here come the questions about that.\u2019 Because up until then nobody had said a word,\u201d White said. \u201cIt was a creation above and beyond Bill\u2019s own self \u2026 We had to find a way of making the whole body work for the shot where he rises from his sarcophagus. So, there was no way around it.\u201d<\/p>\n

Hoult himself has been candid about the awkward moment on set, telling Elle<\/em><\/a> in a recent interview that after voicing that he could feel the prop pushing up against his leg, director Robert Eggers<\/strong> sent him a surprise gift.<\/p>\n

\u201cAs a wrap gift, Rob got it framed, and he sent it to my house,\u201d Hoult told the outlet, noting that he ultimately had to take the prosthetic to a frame shop after the present arrived damaged.<\/p>\n

\u201cWhen I went back to pick it up, I think [the shop owner] clocked, like, how weird it was that I was framing potentially this vampire penis,\u201d Hoult explained. \u201cAnd he was like, \u2018Is this some kind of collector\u2019s piece?\u2019 and I was like, \u2018Hm, you could say that.’\u201d<\/p>\n

While the faux genitalia may have caused some challenges for Hoult, wearing it was no problem for Skarsg\u00e5rd. White told Us<\/em> the actor was the ultimate<\/a> \u201cprofessional.\u201d<\/p>\n

Skarsg\u00e5rd was also involved with the creative process, according to its team and had a say in helping craft Orlok\u2019s mustache. The facial hair was initially supposed to be a lot longer and a different color than what the final product came out to be, thanks to Skarsg\u00e5rd\u2019s input.<\/p>\n

\u201cThere were a few different sizes of mustache to choose from,\u201d White recalled. \u201cI offered up a whole variety. At first it was a bit big, believe it or not, it was bigger than what it is now, and then it\u2019s reduced and if you look closely, it\u2019s actually thinned in the center area and that\u2019s done on purpose so that you can see a little bit more of the teeth and everything beneath there.\u201d<\/p>\n

He continued: \u201cI added a little bit of silver to the end, which I thought would be really lovely and give a little bit of extra character and suggest aging, but not sort of take him too far. And Bill was aware of those color changes. So he agreed and wanted that to be the case.\u201d<\/p>\n
