Jeremy Strong<\/strong><\/a> is subtly weighing in on his former Succession<\/em><\/a> costars poking fun at his method acting.<\/p>\n

The actor, 46, elaborated on his process while discussing his role as Roy Cohn in The Apprentic<\/em>e film, telling Deadline<\/em><\/a> on Tuesday, January 7, \u201cWhen I look at the kind of transformational work based on historical characters that I feel inspired by, from Ben Kingsley in Gandhi, or Phil Hoffman in Capote or what I witnessed Daniel Day-Lewis do in Lincoln, it\u2019s about transcending impersonation and finding the essence in a deep, serious way.\u201d<\/p>\n

Strong said his approach to depicting real people is by trying to \u201cabsorb and learn everything and study them endlessly.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cLately, people have felt a need to take shots at me or say disparaging things, which I don\u2019t really think there\u2019s any need for,\u201d he continued. \u201cThe way I approach things, my process. I feel we\u2019re storytellers. I think about those performances I just mentioned. Those are actors telling a story through character, which to me is the highest bar.\u201d<\/p>\n

Strong had no regrets about his decision to immerse himself<\/a> in his work, adding, \u201cThat\u2019s the holy grail for me, creating a character, which is sort of creating an instrument that\u2019s never existed before. That\u2019s the kind of acting that I love. It does require a devil-may-care attitude towards what anybody might think of what you\u2019re doing.\u201d<\/p>\n

He continued: \u201cIt\u2019s anti-art and not worthy of the dignity of what we\u2019re all trying to do. I think about Roy, how delighted he would be with the muckraking and the stone throwing going on in our country right now.\u201d<\/p>\n

Strong, who played Kendall on Succession<\/em>, previously made headlines when he revealed he sustained injuries<\/a> including hurting his tibia, femur and fracturing his foot.<\/p>\n

\u201cIf I have any method at all, it is simply this: to clear away anything \u2014 anything \u2014 that is not the character and the circumstances of the scene,\u201d Strong explained to The New Yorker<\/em> in December 2021. \u201cAnd usually that means clearing away almost everything around and inside you, so that you can be a more complete vessel for the work at hand.\u201d<\/p>\n

\n\t\t\tGetting in character. Many well-known Hollywood stars use method acting to get into character and to better bring authentic portrayals to the screen. As Nicole Kidman prepared to play the intimidating Masha in Hulu\u2019s\u00a0Nine Perfect Strangers\u00a0adaptation, which premiered in August 2021, she only spoke with Masha\u2019s thick Russian accent and wouldn\u2019t be addressed by her [\u2026]\t\t<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

Strong\u2019s costars Kieran Culkin <\/strong>and Brian Cox<\/strong> have since shared how they weren\u2019t as thrilled by his behavior. Strong acknowledged that his method may come off as \u201cdifficult\u201d to others, adding, \u201cSometimes there must even be room for necessary roughness.\u201d<\/p>\n

Culkin, 42, was quoted in the article when discussing how Strong\u2019s work ethic is \u201csomething that helps\u201d him. \u201cI can tell you that it doesn\u2019t help me,\u201d he noted.<\/p>\n

Cox, 78, meanwhile, expressed concerns about how Strong would be affected in the long run.<\/a><\/p>\n

\u201cThe thing about Jeremy\u2019s approach is it works in terms of what comes out the other end,\u201d he detailed during an appearance on Late Night with Seth Meyers in 2021. \u201cI don\u2019t have a problem with Jeremy because he\u2019s delightful. \u2026 He\u2019s an extraordinary dad. He\u2019s a pretty unique individual. But he does get obsessed with the work. And I worry about what it does to him, because if you can\u2019t separate yourself \u2014 because you\u2019re dealing with all of this material every day. You can\u2019t live in it. Eventually, you get worn out.\u201d<\/p>\n
