Mark Zuckerberg is ditching independent fact-checkers<\/p>\n
The 40-year-old Meta CEO believes the current process is \u201ctoo politically biased\u201d, arguing that fact-checkers have \u201cdestroyed more trust than they have created\u201d, and Zuckerberg is now set to introduce \u201ccommunity notes\u201d instead.<\/p>\n
In a video accompanying a blog post, he said: \u201cWe\u2019re going to get rid of fact-checkers and replace them with community notes similar to X, starting in the US\u2026<\/p>\n
\u201cThe fact-checkers have just been too politically biased and have destroyed more trust than they have created \u2013 especially in the US.<\/p>\n
\u201cOver the next couple of months, we\u2019re going to phase in a more comprehensive community notes system.\u201d<\/p>\n
\nThe billionaire businessman intends to work more closely with the US government in a bid to protect freedom of expression.<\/p>\n
\nMr. Zuckerberg added: \u201cThe US has the strongest constitutional protections for free expression in the world.<\/p>\n
\n\u201cEurope has an ever-increasing number of laws institutionalising censorship and making it difficult to build anything innovative there.<\/p>\n
\n“Latin American countries have secret courts that can order companies to quietly take things down.<\/p>\n
\n“China has censored our apps from even working in the country.<\/p>\n
\n“The only way we can push back on this global trend is with the support of the US Government. And that\u2019s why it\u2019s been so difficult over the past four years when even the US Government has pushed for censorship.<\/p>\n
\n“By going after us and other American companies, it has emboldened other governments to go even further.<\/p>\n
\n“But now, we have the opportunity to resort to free expression, and I am excited to take it.”<\/p>\n
\nThe Meta boss has also announced plans to \u201csimplify\u201d content policies and to \u201cget rid of a bunch of restrictions on topics, like immigration and gender that are just out of touch with mainstream discourse\u201d.<\/p>\n
