After thanking <em>A Different Man<\/em> filmmaker <strong>Aaron Schimberg<\/strong> and his costar <strong>Adam Pearson,<\/strong> who has the genetic condition neurofibromatosis in real life, Stan advocated for more inclusive narratives onscreen. \u201cOur ignorance and discomfort around disability and disfigurement has to end now,\u201d he said. \u201cWe have to normalize it and continue to expose ourselves [and our children] to it. Encourage acceptance.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"paywall\"><em>A Different Man<\/em> languished for two years before it debuted at the Sundance Film Festival, and the A24 movie later landed Stan the Silver Bear for best lead performance in Berlin. But <em>The Apprentice,<\/em> directed by <strong>Ali Abbasi<\/strong> and written by <em>Vanity Fair<\/em> special correspondent <strong>Gabriel Sherman,<\/strong> also endured a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.vanityfair.com\/news\/story\/inside-the-fight-to-release-the-apprentice?srsltid=AfmBOopp1TeMDXP4PWFIDcFEKxXM5-g2j9DW4sOtCRqI0waMc5-fdUoD\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">beleaguered road to distribution<\/a> in the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.vanityfair.com\/hollywood\/story\/inside-the-apprentice-new-york-city-premiere?srsltid=AfmBOoqtTVIWLOKFIDLWk2ocLoEudYyCfaTCHD7Y5n7FLXrtBVaABi4S\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">weeks before the 2024 presidential election<\/a>. \u201cBoth of these films started out as major risks,\u201d Stan told <em>VF<\/em> shortly before the Globes. So when I think about those moments,\u201d he continued, \u201cI\u2019m immediately humbled and on the ground. Because even as it is currently, without anything happening on Sunday, it already feels like such a win.\u201d Stan dedicated the award to his mother and stepfather during his acceptance speech, also taking the time to profess his love to his girlfriend, actor <strong>Annabelle Wallis.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p class=\"paywall\">Stan spent hours in prosthetics for both <em>A Different Man<\/em> and <em>The Apprentice,<\/em> getting comfortable with a bit of metamorphosis. \u201cI kind of liken it, for better or worse, to being in a relationship,\u201d he said of transitioning back to himself postproduction. \u201cI always remember somebody telling me, \u2018However long you\u2019ve been with somebody in a relationship, take away half the time, and that\u2019s how long it\u2019s going to take for you to get over them when you break up.\u2019 It\u2019s a little bit like that. It doesn\u2019t just go away suddenly, I guess. There\u2019s a process\u2026that happens with it. It\u2019s sort of a slow, gradual disconnection.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"paywall\">But does Stan find it harder to disappear into a character or present as himself at an awards show? \u201cThat\u2019s a very good question,\u201d he said with a laugh. \u201cSometimes it\u2019s easier transforming into a role\u2026. Being yourself at an award show, it can be quite tricky, because I\u2019m not going to an award show [thinking], Oh, I\u2019m a funny, interesting guy.
