It didn\u2019t take long for Kat Dennings<\/strong><\/a> and Tim Allen<\/strong><\/a> to build a real-life bond similar to their Shifting Gears<\/em> daughter-dad duo.<\/p>\n

\u201cIt clicked pretty fast. We had lunch after I accepted the role and I felt immediately like I could trust him for some reason,\u201d Dennings, 38, exclusively shared in the newest issue of Us Weekly<\/em><\/a>. \u201cAnd he opened up really fast to me. So I [was] like, \u2018OK, this guy is like letting me in.’\u201d<\/p>\n

Dennings went on to explain that her and Allen\u2019s \u201cinstant\u201d connection has only<\/a> gotten stronger.<\/p>\n

\u201cFor some reason it worked pretty immediately \u2014 maybe because I\u2019ve grown up watching him for so much of my life, but it just worked. It felt very organic,\u201d she recalled. \u201cAnd as [filming has] progressed, our scenes are so funny, if I do say so myself. The arguments are my favorite scenes to play because I have no fear. There\u2019s no fear for either of us. We just absolutely go for it and it\u2019s so much fun.\u201d<\/p>\n

Shifting Gears<\/em>, which premieres on Wednesday, January 8 on ABC, follows widowed father Matt (Allen) and his estranged daughter, Riley (Dennings), as they find themselves living together and working to repair their relationship<\/a>. The sitcom marks Dennings\u2019 return to multi-camera comedy<\/a> nearly a decade after playing Max on CBS\u2019 hit show 2 Broke Girls<\/em> from 2011 to 2017.<\/p>\n

\u201cI felt scared at first because it had been so long. I felt like I forgot everything. Then as soon as we started the first take, it was like I had never left. It was so crazy,\u201d Dennings shared. \u201cI really worked myself out over it. I was really in my head about it. Then it felt so organic. I feel like I never stopped doing multicam work. I love it, I really do.\u201d<\/p>\n

Behind the scenes, Shifting Gears<\/em> reunited Dennings with showrunner Michelle Nader<\/strong>, who previously worked with her on 2 Broke Girls<\/em> and Hulu\u2019s Dollface<\/em>. The Easter eggs don\u2019t stop<\/a> there either, with a guest appearance from Dennings\u2019 former Dollface costar Brenda Song<\/strong> \u2014 and that\u2019s only the beginning.<\/p>\n

\u201cBrenda is one of my best friends in real life because we met on Dollhouse<\/em> and then Michelle is our Shifting Gears<\/em> showrunner. And Brenda and I always talked about doing a multicam together. We would joke like, \u2018Wouldn\u2019t it be great though? So she did [a guest spot] because we just want to hang out,\u201d Dennings said, teasing the upcoming episode. \u201cI can\u2019t reveal too many guest stars but there will be people coming up that are really incredible. I think Michelle has put in a few special little references for me through the whole series.\u201d<\/p>\n

Before the season even premiered, fans were picking up on the potential chemistry<\/a> between Dennings and Scott\u2019s characters.<\/p>\n

\u201cWhat I think personally \u2014 because it is one of my favorite things, too \u2014 is I am on board with stretching it out,\u201d she told Us about the potential fictional romance. \u201cThe best onscreen relationships are when they stretch it out for many, many, many seasons because then the payoff is so satisfying. Hopefully \u2014 if we\u2019re lucky enough to go many seasons \u2014 it\u2019ll take that long.\u201d<\/p>\n

While reflecting on her time on the set of Shifting Gears<\/em><\/a> so far, Dennings called filming a \u201cmagical situation,\u201d adding, \u201cI was having a talk with a friend and I wasn\u2019t sure what to do next. She was like, \u2018Well if you could just describe your dream project, what would it be?\u2019 I was like, \u2018I\u2019d love to do a sitcom again.\u2019 I just described this exact scenario. Then the next day, I got the call about this.\u201d<\/p>\n
