Chevy Chase<\/strong><\/a> had some choice words about the Saturday Night Live<\/em> origin movie, Saturday Night<\/em><\/a>.<\/p>\n

Director Jason Reitman<\/strong> shared Chase\u2019s reaction to the film on a recent episode of Dana Carvey<\/strong> and David Spade<\/strong>\u2019s \u201cFly on the Wall\u201d podcast<\/a>. Setting the scene for the story, Carvey, 69, quipped: \u201cChevy loves to say the thing you\u2019re not supposed to say, to the extreme, where it can go wherever it wants to go.\u201d<\/p>\n

Reitman, 47, began by noting he\u2019s known Chase, 81, \u201cmy entire life\u201d and grew up as friends of his kids. \u201cSo, Chevy comes in to watch the movie, and he\u2019s there with [his wife] Jayni<\/strong> and they watch the film,\u201d he explains. \u201cAnd he\u2019s in the group, and he comes up to me after and he pats me on the shoulder and goes, \u2018Well, you should be embarrassed.\u2019\u201d<\/p>\n

The comment prompted laughter from both Carvey and Spade, 60, the latter of whom stated: \u201cWhat an exact Chevy thing. You couldn\u2019t even write it better. How funny.\u201d<\/p>\n

\n\t\t\tThe Saturday Night\u00a0cast has Us shook by their resemblance to their real-life Saturday Night Live counterparts. The\u00a0 film, which was originally titled SNL 1975, will focus on the behind-the-scenes story of the night leading up to SNL\u2018s first broadcast in October 1975. The movie\u2019s director Jason Reitman wrote the screenplay with Gil Kenan, which was [\u2026]\t\t<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

Carvey, meanwhile, added: \u201cHe knows that\u2019s funny, like, \u2018OK, that\u2019s the roughest thing you could say to a director in that moment.\u2019\u201d<\/p>\n

Following Chase\u2019s review, Reitman said he tried to \u201cbalance\u201d the meaning of the actor\u2019s words. \u201cI know, \u2018Alright, I\u2019m getting a Chevy Chase moment that\u2019s 1,000 percent only for me right now. And from a comedy point-of-view, that\u2019s really pure and that\u2019s kind of cool,\u2019\u201d he stated. \u201cBut also, I just spent, like, two years of my life recreating this moment and trying to capture Chevy perfectly, and also, even in the ego, find the humanity and give him a moment to be loved \u2014 no, none of that s\u2014 played. He\u2019s not talking about that stuff.\u201d<\/p>\n

Spade, for his part, was also unsure how much of Chase\u2019s comment was comedy and how much was truthful. \u201cIt\u2019s a funny thing to say, but then, you gotta look at the meter and go, \u2018What percentage was real? Was it all a joke, or was there a little bit he\u2019s not happy [with]?\u2019\u201d he said. \u201cBut you just don\u2019t know and he leaves, and you go, \u2018Well, he saw it.\u2019\u201d<\/p>\n

Saturday Night<\/em>, which hit theaters in October, follows the cast and crew of SNL<\/em> in the hilarious and hectic 90 minutes leading up to the show\u2019s first broadcast in October 1975. Cory Michael Smith<\/strong> plays a young version of Chase in the film alongside Kaia Gerber<\/strong> as Chase\u2019s then-girlfriend Jacqueline Carlin<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

Gabriel Labelle<\/strong> recently scored a 2025 Golden Globes nomination<\/a> for his performance as the show\u2019s creator, Lorne Michaels<\/strong>. The cast also includes Lamorne Morris<\/strong> as Garrett Morris<\/strong>, Dylan O\u2019Brien<\/strong> as Dan Aykroyd<\/strong>, Matt Wood<\/strong> as John Belushi<\/strong>, Ella Hunt<\/strong> as Gilda Radner<\/strong>, Emily Fairn<\/strong> as Laraine Newman<\/strong>, Kim Matula<\/strong> as Jane Curtin<\/strong>, Rachel Sennott<\/strong> as Rosie Shuster<\/strong> and Cooper Hoffman<\/strong> as Dick Ebersol<\/strong>.<\/p>\n
