Sean Kanan<\/strong><\/a> is opening up about getting sober.<\/p>\n The 58-year-old The Bold & The Beautiful<\/em> star, who has portrayd Deacon Sharpe on the series since 2000, spoke out about what motivated him to quit drinking almost five years ago.<\/p>\n During a conversation with People<\/a>, Sean<\/strong> said that his wife Michele Kanan<\/strong><\/a> made a plea that hit him \u201clike a lightning bolt.\u201d<\/p>\n Keep reading to find out more\u2026<\/em><\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n \u201cShe said to me at one point, \u2018I have put my heart and everything into this relationship. Please tell me that I didn\u2019t back the wrong horse,\u2019\u201d he said.<\/p>\n \u201cI had been trying for a very long time to get sober, and I had intermittent periods of success followed by fairly catastrophic setbacks, let\u2019s say. But when I heard that, I don\u2019t know. The skies parted,\u201d he went on to explain. <\/p>\n \u201cIt set something in motion that was different than everything before.\u201d<\/p>\n Sean<\/strong> says the thought of losing Michele<\/strong> was what he needed to commit to his sobriety.<\/p>\n \u201cI believe there\u2019s two forces in the universe that create profound and lasting change in human beings, and that\u2019s fear and love. I was motivated by both,\u201d he told the outlet.<\/p>\n \u201cI was in fear of losing the thing that I loved the most, which was Michele<\/strong>, and that was the ultimate catalyst that finally got me to get it together.\u201d<\/p>\n In the same interview, Michele<\/strong> clarified that she wasn\u2019t giving Sean<\/strong> an \u201cultimatum,\u201d but a \u201csafe space\u201d to reflect.<\/p>\n \u201cI told him, \u2018Look, this is our life together, and it\u2019s either going to be painful and you\u2019re going to watch me slowly die because I love you, and I see that you\u2019re hurting yourself for some reason that I can\u2019t fix, and that\u2019s going to slowly kill me as well. So, we\u2019re in it together. Whatever you want to do, the ball is in your court,\u2019\u201d she explained.<\/p>\n Sean<\/strong> said that sobriety has had \u201ca profound effect\u201d on his life.<\/p>\n \u201cSomebody said something to me once, and it sounds so simple, \u2018Would you give up one thing to have everything?\u2019 I gave up this one thing, and I have everything. I mean, I truly have everything. That doesn\u2019t mean that I don\u2019t strive for more, but my life is amazing. Probably the most incredible part about [giving up alcohol], aside from my relationship with Michele<\/strong>, is that I don\u2019t miss it. It\u2019s not like I\u2019m white knuckling it and I\u2019m hanging on,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n \u201cI attribute it to God, to my relationship with the Almighty that there has been something that has been fundamentally removed from me that I didn\u2019t ever think could be removed.
