But this new voice assistant and microphone \u2014 you can call it Jarvis! \u2014\u00a0has me more enticed than ever. I might spend the holidays tearing my house apart.<\/li>\n<li class=\"duet--article--dangerously-set-cms-markup mb-16 pl-12 font-fkroman text-18 leading-160 -tracking-1\"><a href=\"https:\/\/about.surf.social\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><strong>Flipboard Surf<\/strong><\/a><strong>. I<\/strong>\u2019ve been ranting and raving for two years about how the fediverse is the future, and Surf \u2014 a way to create and consume feeds of all kinds, from Mastodon and Bluesky to RSS and YouTube \u2014 is the best evidence I\u2019ve seen yet. The app\u2019s waitlist-only and opening up slowly, but you should get on the list. Surf is awesome.<\/li>\n<li class=\"duet--article--dangerously-set-cms-markup mb-16 pl-12 font-fkroman text-18 leading-160 -tracking-1\"><a href=\"https:\/\/labs.google\/fx\/tools\/whisk\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><strong>Google Whisk<\/strong><\/a><strong>. <\/strong>Prompt engineering was\u2026 never a good idea. Google is one of the companies trying to find better ways \u2014 in this case, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theverge.com\/2024\/12\/16\/24322614\/google-whisk-ai-generator-remix-pictures-plug-in\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">it built a way<\/a> to prompt its models just by uploading some inspo images and then describing what you want. I don\u2019t know if it\u2019s useful, per se, but it\u2019s fun to play with.<\/li>\n<li class=\"duet--article--dangerously-set-cms-markup mb-16 pl-12 font-fkroman text-18 leading-160 -tracking-1\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.themoviedb.org\/movie\/939243-sonic-the-hedgehog-3?language=en-US\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><em><strong>Sonic The Hedgehog 3<\/strong><\/em><\/a><em><strong>. <\/strong><\/em>I feel like nobody ever talks about the Sonic movies? But I\u2019ve really enjoyed the first two, and the reviews on the latest installment are really strong. And apparently Jim Carrey is on a whole new level in this one.<\/li>\n<li class=\"duet--article--dangerously-set-cms-markup mb-16 pl-12 font-fkroman text-18 leading-160 -tracking-1\"><a href=\"https:\/\/flyingmeat.com\/acorn\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><strong>Acorn 8<\/strong><\/a><strong>. <\/strong>Acorn is one of my favorite Mac apps. It\u2019s like Photoshop for babies, in the sense that it can\u2019t do everything but it also doesn\u2019t require a master\u2019s degree to use. The new version brings a bunch of automated editing and selection features, Shortcuts integration, and some other useful new stuff.<\/li>\n<li class=\"duet--article--dangerously-set-cms-markup mb-16 pl-12 font-fkroman text-18 leading-160 -tracking-1\"><a href=\"https:\/\/niagaralauncher.app\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><strong>Niagara Launcher<\/strong><\/a><strong>. <\/strong>Niagara remains my favorite Android launcher, and I really like the new Usage Breaker feature that helps you track and manage your screen time. It\u2019s much more subtle, and much more thoughtful, than all the OS-level stuff Google and Apple are doing.<\/li>\n<li class=\"duet--article--dangerously-set-cms-markup mb-16 pl-12 font-fkroman text-18 leading-160 -tracking-1\"><a href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/OpenAI\/status\/1869462463848321264\" target=\"_blank\"><strong>1-800-ChatGPT<\/strong><\/a><strong>. <\/strong>A <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theverge.com\/2024\/12\/18\/24324376\/openai-shipmas-1-800-chatgpt-whatsapp\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">phone hotline for chatting with AI<\/a> is definitely at <em>least <\/em>half a gimmick, but I kind of love it? (You can also message the number on WhatsApp.) There\u2019s a long and delightful history of phone-number tech products like GOOG-411 and 777-FILM, and I\u2019m glad it\u2019s not over.<\/li>\n<li class=\"duet--article--dangerously-set-cms-markup mb-16 pl-12 font-fkroman text-18 leading-160 -tracking-1\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.dpbolvw.net\/click-8836598-14581062?sid=VergeInstaller12&amp;url=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.lg.com%2Fus%2Ftvs%2Flg-oled77t4pua-oled-4k-tv\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><strong>The LG Signature OLED T<\/strong><\/a><strong>. <\/strong>For our last <em>Installer<\/em> of the year, the most expensive thing we\u2019ve ever discussed: a 77-inch, kinda-sorta transparent, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theverge.com\/2024\/12\/18\/24324379\/lg-signature-oled-t-transparent-tv-price-announced\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">fishbowl-looking TV<\/a> that is both extremely cool and totally pointless, and is now on sale for $59,999. Hank is a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/@hankschannel\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><strong>YouTuber<\/strong><\/a> and a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.tiktok.com\/@hankgreen1?lang=en\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><strong>TikToker<\/strong><\/a> and an <a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/SciShow\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><strong>educator<\/strong><\/a> and a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dropout.tv\/videos\/hank-green-pissing-out-cancer\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><strong>standup comic<\/strong><\/a> and a <a href=\"https:\/\/good.store\/pages\/first-sock-6\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><strong>merchant slash philanthropist<\/strong><\/a> and an <a href=\"https:\/\/hankgreen.com\/books\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><strong>author<\/strong><\/a> and just, like, everyone\u2019s favorite person on the internet it seems? All of this has evolved over years and now I just know where everything is and can never change anything. If there\u2019s any hot take on this home screen, it\u2019s that more people should use Wikipedia as a primary search engine \u2014 it\u2019s often where you\u2019re going to end up anyway, so I keep that very handy. Also, I recently moved Twitter out of my social networking folder to make it harder for me to use. It\u2019s like three swipes away now, though still on my phone. I run several Shopify stores that are a big part of my business, so that\u2019s why that\u2019s there!<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"duet--article--article-body-component\">\n<p class=\"duet--article--dangerously-set-cms-markup duet--article--standard-paragraph mb-20 font-fkroman text-18 leading-160 -tracking-1 selection:bg-franklin-20 dark:text-white dark:selection:bg-blurple [&amp;_a:hover]:shadow-highlight-franklin dark:[&amp;_a:hover]:shadow-highlight-blurple [&amp;_a]:shadow-underline-black dark:[&amp;_a]:shadow-underline-white\">By far the most-used non-social media app on my phone is Notes. I rely on it in a very unhealthy way that makes it an extremely entertaining scroll\u2026 for me at least. My short-term memory isn\u2019t what it used to be, so everything ends up in there.
