When Tiffany Boone<\/strong> stepped in for her Mufasa<\/em> audition, she had no idea she would get to play the iconic lion queen Sarabi.<\/p>\n

\u201cI created the character that was in my head, [but] I didn\u2019t know I was auditioning for Sarabi,\u201d the actress, 37, exclusively told Us Weekly<\/em> on Thursday, December 19, while discussing Mufasa: The Lion King<\/em><\/a>. \u201cIt had a different name on the page. So I was like, \u2018This must be some new character.\u2019\u201d<\/p>\n

As Boone read through the script, she thought the character seemed \u201ccool\u201d and wanted to use her voice to reflect that aspect of her personality. Boone was thrown for a loop once it was revealed that she was going to voice the beloved cartoon character.<\/p>\n

\u201cSo when they told me who I was actually playing, I was like, \u2018Oh, that\u2019s quite a bit of pressure, actually,\u2019\u201d she confessed.<\/p>\n

Boone shared that she asked director Barry Jenkins whether he wanted her to make her vocals sound more like Madge Sinclair<\/strong>, who originally voiced the character<\/a> in the original Lion King<\/em> from 1994, or like Alfre Woodard<\/strong>, who played Sarabi in the 2019 live-action adaptation<\/a>. Jenkins, 45, had faith in Boone\u2019s talent and encouraged her to be herself as they developed Sarabi\u2019s backstory.<\/p>\n

\u201cI had so much freedom to create the younger version of her and give the other layers to the character [and] the challenges that she went through to become the great queen that she becomes,\u201d she told Us<\/em>.<\/p>\n

As a fan of The Lion King<\/em>, Boone always saw Sarabi as the \u201cperfect\u201d wife, mother and queen, so she wanted fans to get a taste of Sarabi\u2019s personality before she became Mufasa\u2019s loyal partner.<\/p>\n

\u201cShe wasn\u2019t always perfect. She\u2019s sassy \u2026 she\u2019s sarcastic and she makes fun of the boys,\u201d Boone said, referring to Mufasa and his adopted brother, Taka, who will become Scar later on. \u201cI think she has a sense of humor about her. She\u2019s really vulnerable, and all those things are really fun to add to the complexity of the Sarabi that we see later on.\u201d<\/p>\n

Boone teased that fans might be \u201csurprised\u201d to see how Sarabi\u2019s relationship with Mufasa (voiced by Aaron Pierre<\/strong>) unfolds, hinting it\u2019s \u201cnot such a straight line.\u201d As for rumors of a love triangle between Sarabi, Mufasa and Scar, Boone hinted that fans will \u201cget an answer\u201d when they see the movie.<\/p>\n

\u201cYou\u2019re gonna get to understand the three of them a lot better, for sure,\u201d she teased.<\/p>\n

Boone admitted that she\u2019s \u201cstill pinching\u201d herself that she is now a member of the Lion King<\/em> family.<\/p>\n

\u201cI can\u2019t believe that I\u2019m a part of it,\u201d she shared, noting that her younger self couldn\u2019t have dreamed of such an opportunity. \u201cTelling that little version of me that used to sit and watch the VHS in my mother\u2019s bed over and over again, like, \u2018You\u2019re gonna be a part of that family, that story.\u2019 I feel like her little head would explode. My imagination couldn\u2019t even dream of this.\u201d<\/p>\n

This is extremely exciting for Disney fanatics \u2014 as well as fans of certain celebs who have been lucky enough to take on the iconic characters. Then [\u2026]\t\t<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

However, Boone admitted that there was \u201cdefinitely pressure\u201d to make sure she and the whole Mufasa team delivered \u2014 especially for fans of the animated classic.<\/p>\n
