George Santos<\/strong>, the controversial Republican congressman representing parts of New York City and Nassau County, will announce that he\u2019s going to run again on Monday, despite calls for him to resign from both sides of the aisle and as investigations on a federal, state and local level persist.\u00a0<\/p>\n According to the\u00a0New York Post<\/em>, a source said that Santos \u201ccalled big donors and sat down with supporters and believes he can raise $500,000 to $750,000 in the second quarter of 2023.\u201d<\/p>\n \u201cIf the field is crowded enough and Santos keeps running to the right, it\u2019s possible he could skate by with a plurality,\u201d\u00a0Gavin Wax<\/strong>, president of the New York Young Republican Club, told the\u00a0Post<\/em>. \u201cHe needs to build a cult following and continue to humanize himself.\u201d<\/p>\n Santos filed his\u00a0FEC statement of candidacy<\/a>\u00a0in March, but hasn\u2019t officially announced his run.\u00a0Vanity Fair<\/em> has reached out for comment.<\/p>\n Earlier this week, news broke that a possible Santos rival will jump in the ring. Former New York Rep. Tom Suozzi<\/strong>\u00a0is reportedly speaking with wealthy donors and politicians (including House Minority Leader\u00a0Hakeem Jeffries<\/strong>) about a run for his old seat, which Santos currently holds. Suozzi was voted into office in\u00a02016 and served until 2023<\/a>, when he ran for governor of New York but lost to\u00a0Kathy Hochul<\/strong> in the primary.<\/p>\n \u201cHe certainly is\u00a0giving it consideration<\/a>. I don\u2019t think he\u2019s made his mind up by any means,\u201d New York Democratic Committee Chair\u00a0Jay Jacobs<\/strong> told CNBC.\u00a0<\/p>\n A Suozzi advisor also told the outlet that \u201cTom has been approached by Hakeem, Jay and many others in D.C.\u201d The advisor added, \u201cHe is open to it, but nothing is going to happen unless Santos leaves office and there is a special election, or possibly 2024.\u201d<\/p>\n Santos has told a whirlwind of fabrications; perhaps most notably, he claimed that his\u00a0grandparents fled Hitler<\/a>, said he was a star volleyball player at Baruch College<\/a>, and lied about\u00a0producing the unsuccessful Spider-Man musical<\/a>. Last month, prosecutors in Brazil\u00a0reached a deal with Santos<\/a> in a 2008 case in which Santos was accused of spending $700 at a Niter\u00f3i clothing store using a stolen checkbook and a pseudonym<\/a>.\u00a0<\/p>\n The Republican representative is also facing investigations: a\u00a0federal investigation into his finances<\/a> as well as a House Ethics Committee investigation. The bipartisan subcommittee said it will determine whether Santos \u201cengaged in unlawful activity with respect to his 2022 congressional campaign<\/a>; failed to properly disclose required information on statements filed with the House; violated federal conflict of interest laws in connection with his role in a firm providing fiduciary services; and\/or engaged in sexual misconduct towards an individual seeking employment in his congressional office.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n House Speaker\u00a0Kevin McCarthy<\/strong> said at the time the House panel investigation was announced that he would have \u201cdifficulty\u201d supporting Santos again but added, \u201cI think we\u2019d have to see the election.\u201d<\/p>\n After the FEC filing Santos made in March, Nassau County Republican Chairman\u00a0Joseph Cairo<\/strong>\u00a0said the controversial congressman \u201cwill not receive the Nassau GOP\u2019s endorsement for reelection in 2024<\/a>.\u201d He added, \u201cIf he decides to run, we will oppose and beat him.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/div>\n
