His next film, After the Hunt,<\/em> ought to continue demonstrating that passion. \u201cIt\u2019s a very different movie from what I\u2019ve done so far,\u201d Guadagnino says. A colleague recently pointed out its place in his oeuvre: \u201cThree movies in a short span of time\u2014Challengers, Queer,<\/em> and After the Hunt<\/em>\u2014and two female-driven stories bookend a love story between men in the center.\u201d Reznor and Ross are already signed on to score the film, while Costa has been hard at work editing. \u201cWe were talking a lot about time\u2014it\u2019s a movie about the internal tension of time,\u201d Guadagnino says of the cutting process. \u201cWhat is the unity between one second and the other? Infinite.\u201d<\/p>\n This year marked the 25th anniversary of Guadagnino\u2019s debut feature, The Protagonists,<\/em> a crime thriller starring one of his most frequent collaborators, Tilda Swinton.<\/strong> The director thinks back to that time with some anxiety. \u201cI had my movie in my mind, and I was really adamant to make the movie I had in my mind,\u201d he says. \u201c[But] there were the limits of money. There was my inexperience. That was a very cold shower.\u201d Helming his follow-up, the erotic drama Melissa P.,<\/em> was a \u201ctraumatic\u201d experience\u2014he felt \u201cdisempowered,\u201d unable to navigate the whims of those around him.<\/p>\n You can draw a line from those early, frustrating experiences to where Guadagnino finds himself now, working fast and at his prime. What seem like risks keep paying off\u2014bringing in a fashion house\u2019s creative director to lead an ambitious costume department; finding new notes for a pair of music legends to play. Hell, on Queer,<\/em> he hired an architect as the production designer, with the job of recreating \u201950s Mexico City on a bunch of soundstages in Rome. That\u2019s Stefano Baisi,<\/strong> and he too is coming back as production designer for After the Hunt.<\/em> It\u2019ll be his second movie.<\/p>\n \u201cThey\u2019re my friends\u2014all of these people are my friends,\u201d Guadagnino says. \u201cThat\u2019s what I love about it: friendship.\u201d<\/p>\n
