The films of 2024 left Us<\/em> with some incredible moments that made Us<\/em> laugh, cry and ponder the meaning of life. Others, meanwhile, left Us<\/em> simply saying, \u201cWTF?\u201d<\/p>\n

To be clear, WTF is not always a bad reaction: Challengers\u2019<\/em> ability to leave Us wanting more was admirable, while Nicolas Cage\u2019s<\/strong> performance in Longlegs<\/em> only helped the film feel more unnerving. Sure, Demi Moore<\/strong> and Margaret Qualley\u2019s<\/strong> Monstro Elisasue transformation grossed Us<\/em> out, but the performances are undeniably brilliant.<\/p>\n

Then there are, of course, the WTF moments that feel like they could have been helped. Madame Web\u2019s<\/em> failure at the box office was followed by criticism of the flimsy plot, clunky dialogue and questionable editing. While some superhero fans were surprised the film didn\u2019t deliver, star Dakota Johnson wasn\u2019t one of them.<\/p>\n

\u201cUnfortunately, I\u2019m not surprised that this has gone down the way it has,\u201d the actress told Bustle<\/em><\/a> in March. \u201cIt\u2019s so hard to get movies made, and in these big movies that get made \u2014 and it\u2019s even starting to happen with the little ones, which is what\u2019s really freaking me out \u2014 decisions are being made by committees, and art does not do well when it\u2019s made by committee. Films are made by a filmmaker and a team of artists around them. You cannot make art based on numbers and algorithms.\u201d<\/p>\n

From a sports drama about three tennis superstars in a decades-long love triangle to a movie musical adaptation of a [\u2026]\t\t<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

Johnson claimed that studio executives have started to believe that audiences are not as \u201csmart\u201d as they actually are, which is why they can \u201csniff out the bulls\u2014.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cIt was definitely an experience for me to make that movie,\u201d she continued. \u201cI had never done anything like it before. I probably will never do anything like it again because I don\u2019t make sense in that world. And I know that now. But sometimes in this industry, you sign on to something, and it\u2019s one thing and then as you\u2019re making it, it becomes a completely different thing, and you\u2019re like, \u2018Wait, what?\u2019 But it was a real learning experience, and of course it\u2019s not nice to be a part of something that\u2019s ripped to shreds, but I can\u2019t say that I don\u2019t understand.\u201d<\/p>\n

Not Knowing Who Won That \u2018Challengers\u2019 Match<\/b><\/h3>\n

Every iota of tension that builds between trio of tennis phenoms Tashi (Zendaya<\/strong>), Art (Mike Faist<\/strong>) and Patrick (Josh O\u2019Connor<\/strong>) comes to a head in the climactic moment of this Luca Guadagnino<\/strong>-directed sports drama when the two men face off in a tennis match after years of estrangement \u2014 with Tashi sat right smack in the middle.<\/p>\n

Guadagnino captures the moment through unique angles on the court, placing the audience behind the players, under the net and even as the ball itself. The bass-thumping techno beats blaring as Art and Patrick go point for point only makes the sequence more dizzying. And oh, did we mention the match comes one day after Patrick sleeps with Tashi<\/a>, who happens to be Art\u2019s wife?<\/p>\n

And while the moment is nothing short of phenomenally executed, Guadagnino\u2019s decision to end the movie without revealing who actually wins is what lands it on this WTF list. Some might say that\u2019s exactly how it\u00a0should\u00a0<\/i>have concluded, leaving the results up to the viewer\u2019s imagination, but after two hours of complex relationships building only to shift and fray, learning where these three end up would have left Us<\/em> satisfied.<\/p>\n

Being Robbed of Glen Powell and Daisy Edgar Jones Making Out in \u2019Twisters\u2019<\/b><\/h3>\n

Everyone knows the best part of a rom-com is when the two\u00a0 rivals-who-couldn\u2019t-stand-each-other-two-hours-ago end up running into each other\u2019s arms to share a passionate kiss. It\u2019s a staple for the genre, but one Lee Isaac Chung<\/strong> ultimately chose to do without when directing the sequel to the 1996 original film.<\/p>\n

It turns out a kiss was initially shot for Twisters<\/em>. When Glen Powell\u2019s<\/strong> Tyler runs<\/a> into the airport to chase love interest Kate, played by Daisy Edgar Jones<\/strong>, the pair were supposed to give into their desires. That changed when producer Steven Spielberg<\/strong> suggested going a different way.<\/p>\n

Edgar-Jones told Collider<\/em> in August that Spielberg felt ending the film without a kiss \u201cstops the film feeling too clich\u00e9d\u201d and that the understanding that \u201cthis isn\u2019t the end of their story. They\u2019re united by their shared passion for something.\u201d (We\u2019re not usually one to question an absolute icon like Spielberg, but \u2026 huh?)<\/p>\n

So, what actually happens? Tyler still does his hero mad dash into the airport to catch Kate before she flies away, but instead of laying on her, he tells her he wants to chase more storms together. Cue credits. And Us<\/em> saying \u201cWTF.\u201d<\/p>\n

Nicolas Cage\u2019s Song of Our Nightmares in \u2018Longlegs\u2019\u00a0<\/b><\/h3>\n

When NEON dropped its creepiest, most intricate marketing campaign of all time, horror fans everywhere knew Longlegs<\/em> would be the can\u2019t-miss event of the year. When it\u00a0 finally premiered in July, it didn\u2019t disappoint \u2014 and that\u2019s largely thanks to Cage\u2019s unnervingly eerie performance <\/a>as the titular character.<\/p>\n

Longlegs, real name is Dale Ferdinand Kobble, is a devil worshiper who murders entire families and leaves no physical evidence at the scene of his crimes. The film follows Maika Monroe<\/strong> as FBI Special Agent Lee Harker, a rookie who has special connection with the serial killer, as she is tasked with figuring out how, and why.<\/p>\n

Every second (an entirely unrecognizable) Cage is on screen is terrifying, but his performance of \u201cFire Fire Fire, Hiss\u201d \u2014 an original song the actor recorded and released in its entirety \u2014 remains the movie\u2019s top \u201cWTF\u201d moment.<\/p>\n

The song can be found on YouTube with the caption, \u201cThe last known musical recording by Dale Ferdinand Kobble before the voices took over.\u201d Yikes!<\/p>\n

Jenna Ortega\u2019s \u2018Beetlejuice Beetlejuice\u2019 Demon Baby\u00a0<\/b><\/h3>\n

Any Tim Burton<\/strong>-directed movie is ensured to have a wide array of head-scratching moments \u2014 especially one about a demon (played by Michael Keaton<\/strong>) who haunts people\u2019s lives<\/a> after they say his name three times.<\/p>\n

The 1988 film was beautifully weird, but the sequel manages to deliver an even more heightened experience while still mainly depending on practical effects rather than CGI. That approach makes one particular sequence in which Lydia\u2019s (Winona Ryder<\/strong>) daughter, Astrid (Jenna Ortega<\/strong>) gives birth to a demonic baby Beetlejuice even more insane. The decrepit looking infant pops up from between Astrid\u2019s legs \u2014 complete with its dad\u2019s hair, ghostly-white complexion and covered in blood \u2014 declaring his arrival.<\/p>\n

Baby Beetlejuice turns out to just be a figment in a nightmare Lydia is having about her daughter (whew!), but that little creature is still haunting our brains months later.<\/p>\n

\u2018Monstro ElisaSue\u2019 in \u2019The Substance\u2019\u00a0<\/b><\/h3>\n

Demi Moore<\/strong> gives one of the best performances of her career in The Substance<\/em>, a body horror film that follows her character, Elizabeth, as she begins taking a mysterious pill that allows her to share an existence with a younger body double, Sue (Margaret Qualley<\/strong>).<\/p>\n

The transformations are hard to watch from the very beginning \u2014 it is body horror, after all \u2014 but it\u2019s when Sue decides she wants to be the duo\u2019s primary body, and breaks the rules of The Substance<\/em>, that things take a turn for the truly gruesome.<\/a><\/p>\n

Rules are rules, so when Sue decides to take matters in her own hands, she forces herself and Elizabeth to face the consequences, turning them into director Coralie Fareat\u2019s<\/strong> creation: Monstro Elisasue.<\/p>\n

The monster is a hideous amalgamation of both women, one that starts to decay and melt more by the second. Despite the transformation, Sue still heads to her New Year\u2019s Eve show \u2014 she\u2019s a famous fitness instructor \u2014 but horrifies the audience, who become showered in blood once Elisaue explodes and leaves nothing more than a pile of guts in her wake.<\/p>\n

Yeah, WTF.<\/p>\n

Jennifer Garner\u2019s Divorce Joke About Ben Affleck in \u2018Deadpool & Wolverine\u2019<\/b><\/h3>\n

Jennifer Garner<\/strong> referencing her divorce with Ben Affleck<\/strong> on screen in 2024 wasn\u2019t on our bingo cards! The actress returned to her role as Elektra for Deadpool & Wolverine<\/em> after first playing the character opposite Affleck in 2003\u2019s Deadpool<\/em>. The two fell in love while working together and married two years later. They divorced in 2018 after welcoming three children.<\/p>\n

For Deadpool & Wolverine<\/em>, Elektra is scouted to help the titular characters (played by Ryan Reynolds<\/strong> and Hugh Jackman<\/strong>, respectively) defeat super villain Cassandra (Emma Corrin<\/strong>). When Elektra mentions that someone always dies when they fight Cassandra and her troupe \u2014 noting Quicksilver, Hawkeye and Daredevil as three of her victims \u2014 Deadpool gives his deep condolences about Elektra losing her longtime love.<\/p>\n

Elektra\u2019s reaction, however, is less than emotional. \u201cIt\u2019s fine,\u201d she responds with an unaffected shrug.<\/a> The moment is an obvious meta play on Garner and Affleck real-life split, and surprising enough to make this list.<\/p>\n

Madame Web\u2019s ADR Nightmare<\/b><\/h3>\n

Despite having an all-star cast in Dakota Johsnon, Sydney Sweeney, Isabela Merced, Emma Roberts, Adam Scott<\/strong> and more, Sony\u2019s Madame Web<\/em> made waves for its convoluted story, unrealistic dialogue and questionable special effects.<\/p>\n

A \u201cso bad it\u2019s good\u201d movie can be a delicious watch, but the superhero flick \u2014 which currently has an 11 percent critic score on Rotten Tomatoes \u2014 crossed into nearly unwatchable with the misalignment in the dialogue of Tahar Rahim\u2019s<\/strong> character, Ezekiel Sims.<\/p>\n

Using Automated Dialogue Replacement (ADR) for certain moments in TV and film is nothing new, and it\u2019s usually not much of a distraction. In Madame Web\u2019s<\/em> case, however, Rahim often mouths something that doesn\u2019t match up with the ADR recording, while in other scenes show the character speaking without his lips moving<\/a> at all.<\/p>\n

Chances are Madame Web will become a campy classic as the years progress, ADR mishap and all.<\/p>\n

\u2018Mean Girls\u2019 Making a Movie Musical Off a Broadway Show Off a Movie<\/b><\/h3>\n

Hear Us<\/em> out. It\u2019s not that the Mean Girls<\/em> movie musical adaptation<\/a> wasn\u2019t fun. But it was a confusing choice to bring the 2018 broadway adaptation, which is based on a 2004 film, to the big screen in 2024.<\/p>\n

Add in some actors returning to their original movie roles \u2014 creator Tina Fey<\/strong> as Ms. Norbury and Tim Meadow<\/strong> as Principal Duvall, for example \u2014 while also recasting other actors from the original in new parts \u2014 like OG lead Lindsay Lohan<\/strong> \u2014 and things start to get unnecessarily twisted.<\/p>\n

The layers don\u2019t end there. Original Broadway cast member Renee Rapp<\/strong>, who played Queen Bee Regina George on stage, also reprised her role in the movie musical, while other characters \u2014 like Aaron Samuels, Gretch Weiners, Karen Smith and Janis Ian \u2014 were recast entirely. Consider Us<\/em> confused.<\/p>\n

The Fact \u2018Megalopolis\u2019 Exists\u00a0<\/b><\/h3>\n

Here\u2019s what Megalopolis<\/em> is supposed<\/em> to be about: Set in an alternate, 21st century New York City, Cesar (Adam Driver<\/strong>), a genius artist, and Mayor Franklyn Cicero (Giancarlo Espocito<\/strong>), face off about their plans for the future of society. Cesar hopes\u00a0 to create a utopia (yes, Megalopolis), while Cicero wants to keep control of his corrupt establishment.<\/p>\n

What is Megalopolis\u00a0actually<\/i>\u00a0about? Great question. There are flashes of that plot \u2014\u00a0 which clearly draws inspiration from Roman history \u2014 but it all eventually becomes so convoluted and bizarre it\u2019s hard to keep track of what is happening on screen.<\/p>\n

The film is meant to be Francis Ford Coppola\u2019s<\/strong> magnum opus; a dream project he spent four decades trying to execute, and what is likely to be his last major project.<\/p>\n

From that perspective, maybe it doesn\u2019t matter what Megalopolis is. But those of Us<\/em> who jetted out to theaters were left with confusing plot lines, characters who speak in Shakespeare, Ovid or even Latin, and a question of WTF, exactly, we just watched.<\/p>\n

Joker Not Being Joker \u2014 We Think? \u2014 And Then Dying<\/b><\/h3>\n

Still stuck inside Arkham State Mental Hospital and standing trial for five murders two years after the first film, Joker: Folie \u00e0 Deux<\/em> catches back up with Arthur (Joaquin Phoenix<\/strong>) as he meets fellow patient Lee (Lady Gaga<\/strong>). Together, the maniacal duo set out to find true love, drama \u2014 and their own musical fantasia \u2014 as they embrace chaos and anarchy in Gotham City.<\/p>\n

The first Joker was an incredible success, which meant the sequel garnered serious anticipation. And while the movie had its moments, some fans were left confused by some of director Todd Phillips\u2019<\/strong> creative choices.<\/p>\n
