Others, meanwhile, left <em>Us<\/em> simply saying, \u201cWTF?\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"p3\">To be clear, WTF is not always a bad reaction: <em>Challengers\u2019<\/em> ability to leave Us wanting more was admirable, while <strong>Nicolas Cage\u2019s<\/strong> performance in <em>Longlegs<\/em> only helped the film feel more unnerving. Sure, <strong>Demi Moore<\/strong> and <strong>Margaret Qualley\u2019s<\/strong> Monstro Elisasue transformation grossed <em>Us<\/em> out, but the performances are undeniably brilliant.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p3\">Then there are, of course, the WTF moments that feel like they could have been helped. <em>Madame Web\u2019s<\/em> failure at the box office was followed by criticism of the flimsy plot, clunky dialogue and questionable editing. While some superhero fans were surprised the film didn\u2019t deliver, star Dakota Johnson wasn\u2019t one of them.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p3\">\u201cUnfortunately, I\u2019m not surprised that this has gone down the way it has,\u201d the actress told <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bustle.com\/entertainment\/dakota-johnson-teatime-book-club\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><em>Bustle<\/em><\/a> in March. \u201cIt\u2019s so hard to get movies made, and in these big movies that get made \u2014 and it\u2019s even starting to happen with the little ones, which is what\u2019s really freaking me out \u2014 decisions are being made by committees, and art does not do well when it\u2019s made by committee. Films are made by a filmmaker and a team of artists around them. From a sports drama about three tennis superstars in a decades-long love triangle to a movie musical adaptation of a [\u2026]\t\t<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<p class=\"p3\">Johnson claimed that studio executives have started to believe that audiences are not as \u201csmart\u201d as they actually are, which is why they can \u201csniff out the bulls\u2014.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"p3\">\u201cIt was definitely an experience for me to make that movie,\u201d she continued. \u201cI had never done anything like it before. I probably will never do anything like it again because I don\u2019t make sense in that world. And I know that now. The bass-thumping techno beats blaring as Art and Patrick go point for point only makes the sequence more dizzying. And oh, did we mention the match comes one day after <a href=\"https:\/\/www.usmagazine.com\/entertainment\/news\/zendayas-love-triangle-heats-up-in-new-challengers-trailer\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Patrick sleeps with Tashi<\/a>, who happens to be Art\u2019s wife?<\/p>\n<p class=\"p3\">And while the moment is nothing short of phenomenally executed, Guadagnino\u2019s decision to end the movie without revealing who actually wins is what lands it on this WTF list. It\u2019s a staple for the genre, but one <strong>Lee Isaac Chung<\/strong> ultimately chose to do without when directing the sequel to the 1996 original film.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p3\">It turns out a kiss was initially shot for <em>Twisters<\/em>. When<a href=\"https:\/\/www.usmagazine.com\/entertainment\/news\/glen-powell-breaks-down-twisters-film-discusses-his-love-for-cinema\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><strong> Glen Powell\u2019s<\/strong> Tyler runs<\/a> into the airport to chase love interest Kate, played by <strong>Daisy Edgar Jones<\/strong>, the pair were supposed to give into their desires. That changed when producer <strong>Steven Spielberg<\/strong> suggested going a different way.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p3\">Edgar-Jones told <em>Collider<\/em> in August that Spielberg felt ending the film without a kiss \u201cstops the film feeling too clich\u00e9d\u201d and that the understanding that \u201cthis isn\u2019t the end of their story. They\u2019re united by their shared passion for something.\u201d (We\u2019re not usually one to question an absolute icon like Spielberg, but \u2026 huh?)<\/p>\n<p class=\"p3\">So, what actually happens? Tyler still does his hero mad dash into the airport to catch Kate before she flies away, but instead of laying on her, he tells her he wants to chase more storms together. Cue credits. When it\u00a0 finally premiered in July, it didn\u2019t disappoint \u2014 and that\u2019s largely thanks to Cage\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.usmagazine.com\/entertainment\/news\/how-longlegs-nicolas-cage-transformed-into-terrifying-character\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">unnervingly eerie performance <\/a>as the titular character.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p3\">Longlegs, real name is Dale Ferdinand Kobble, is a devil worshiper who murders entire families and leaves no physical evidence at the scene of his crimes. That approach makes one particular sequence in which Lydia\u2019s (<strong>Winona Ryder<\/strong>) daughter, Astrid (<strong>Jenna Ortega<\/strong>) gives birth to a demonic baby Beetlejuice even more insane. The decrepit looking infant pops up from between Astrid\u2019s legs \u2014 complete with its dad\u2019s hair, ghostly-white complexion and covered in blood \u2014 declaring his arrival.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p3\">Baby Beetlejuice turns out to just be a figment in a nightmare Lydia is having about her daughter (whew!), but that little creature is still haunting our brains months later.<\/p>\n<h3 class=\"p3\"><b>\u2018Monstro ElisaSue\u2019 in \u2019The Substance\u2019\u00a0<\/b><\/h3>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.usmagazine.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/12\/WTF-Movie-Moments-of-2024-098.jpg?w=300\" alt=\"WTF Movie Moments of 2024 098\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.usmagazine.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/12\/WTF-Movie-Moments-of-2024-098.jpg?w=400 400w, https:\/\/www.usmagazine.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/12\/WTF-Movie-Moments-of-2024-098.jpg?w=700 700w, https:\/\/www.usmagazine.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/12\/WTF-Movie-Moments-of-2024-098.jpg?w=800 800w, https:\/\/www.usmagazine.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/12\/WTF-Movie-Moments-of-2024-098.jpg?w=1400 1400w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 680px) calc(100vw - 6em), (max-width: 1000px) 80vw, 1000px\"\/><\/p>\n<p class=\"p3\"><strong>Demi Moore<\/strong> gives one of the best performances of her career in <em>The Substance<\/em>, a body horror film that follows her character, Elizabeth, as she begins taking a mysterious pill that allows her to share an existence with a younger body double, Sue (<strong>Margaret Qualley<\/strong>).<\/p>\n<p class=\"p3\">The transformations are hard to watch from the very beginning \u2014 it is body horror, after all \u2014 but it\u2019s when Sue decides she wants to be the duo\u2019s primary body, and breaks the rules of<em> The Substance<\/em>, that things take a turn <a href=\"https:\/\/www.usmagazine.com\/entertainment\/news\/demi-moore-shares-secrets-behind-the-substances-most-shocking-scenes\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">for the truly gruesome.<\/a><\/p>\n<p class=\"p3\">Rules are rules, so when Sue decides to take matters in her own hands, she forces herself and Elizabeth to face the consequences, turning them into director <strong>Coralie Fareat\u2019s<\/strong> creation: Monstro Elisasue.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p3\">The monster is a hideous amalgamation of both women, one that starts to decay and melt more by the second. It\u2019s not that the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.usmagazine.com\/entertainment\/news\/mean-girls-movie-musical-is-fun-and-fetch-review\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><em>Mean Girls<\/em> movie musical adaptation<\/a> wasn\u2019t fun. But it was a confusing choice to bring the 2018 broadway adaptation, which is based on a 2004 film, to the big screen in 2024.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p3\">Add in some actors returning to their original movie roles \u2014 creator<strong> Tina Fey<\/strong> as Ms. Norbury and <strong>Tim Meadow<\/strong> as Principal Duvall, for example \u2014 while also recasting other actors from the original in new parts \u2014 like OG lead <strong>Lindsay Lohan<\/strong> \u2014 and things start to get unnecessarily twisted.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p3\">The layers don\u2019t end there. Original Broadway cast member <strong>Renee Rapp<\/strong>, who played Queen Bee Regina George on stage, also reprised her role in the movie musical, while other characters \u2014 like Aaron Samuels, Gretch Weiners, Karen Smith and Janis Ian \u2014 were recast entirely. Cesar hopes\u00a0 to create a utopia (yes, Megalopolis), while Cicero wants to keep control of his corrupt establishment.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p3\">What is Megalopolis<i>\u00a0actually<\/i>\u00a0about? Great question. There are flashes of that plot \u2014\u00a0 which clearly draws inspiration from Roman history \u2014 but it all eventually becomes so convoluted and bizarre it\u2019s hard to keep track of what is happening on screen.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p3\">The film is meant to be <strong>Francis Ford Coppola\u2019s<\/strong> magnum opus; a dream project he spent four decades trying to execute, and what is likely to be his last major project.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p3\">From that perspective, maybe it doesn\u2019t matter what Megalopolis is.
