The Canada native revealed that his pal would join him in a comedic announcement video in September 2022. \u201cI\u2019ve had to really search my soul on this one. His first appearance in the MCU [Marvel Cinematic Universe] obviously needs to feel special,\u201d Reynolds said in the clip. \u201cWe need to stay true to the character, find new depth, new motivation, new meaning. The reunion between Reynolds\u2019 Merc With a Mouth and Jackman\u2019s clawed crusader had been in the making for a long time. \u201cI\u2019ve been asking him to do it for six straight years,\u201d the Just Friends<\/em> star told Entertainment Tonight<\/em> <\/a>in November 2022.<\/p>\n

\u201cIt was ultimately Hugh that said, \u2018I think I am ready to come back,’\u201d Reynolds said. \u201cAll we had to do was sell it to [Marvel Studios co-president] Kevin Feige<\/strong>, which didn\u2019t take long.\u201d<\/p>\n

Though Feige was ready to welcome Jackman, he still had to cut through some red tape. After all, the X-Men haven\u2019t been introduced to the Marvel Cinematic Universe<\/a>. The Avengers live in the Disney-owned MCU, produced by Marvel Studios, while the mutants previously lived in 20th Century Fox\u2019s X-Men universe. However, Disney now owns Fox, so Deadpool can exist alongside the Avengers for the first time.<\/p>\n

\u201cIt\u2019s not like adding Hugh Jackman to a movie like this is a hard sell. It\u2019s an immediate and emphatic, unqualified yes,\u201d Reynolds told Collider<\/em><\/a> that month. \u201cIt\u2019s a lot of moving parts and Fox and X-Men and all that kind of stuff that Marvel needs to sort through. A lot of red tape in order to make that happen. And they did it.\u201d<\/p>\n

He added: \u201cAnd I\u2019m really grateful that they did it, because for me, working with Hugh is a dream come true. But working with Logan and having Logan and Wade together in a movie is beyond any dream I would ever be audacious enough to have. The problem with Jackman returning as Wolverine is that the hero died in 2017’s Logan<\/em>. However, fans will remember the movie took place in 2029. The third Deadpool<\/em> is set in present day.<\/p>\n

What Inspired Hugh’s Decision?<\/h2>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<\/p><\/div>\n

Jackman explained his out-of-the-blue call to Reynolds during a December 2022 appearance on SiriusXM\u2019s The Jess Cagle Show<\/em><\/a>. “I had a week’s vacation from [Broadway’s The Music Man<\/em>] and I was driving out, and it just came to me like that. I rang Ryan as soon as I arrived and he was floored,” Jackman recalled. “Interestingly, he was just about to have a meeting with Kevin Feige<\/strong> at Marvel at 5 o’clock that afternoon about the Deadpool<\/em> movie. And so he goes, \u2018This is really good timing, but are you really sure? Cause I don’t wanna say anything.\u2019 I said, \u2018I’m a hundred percent sure.\u2019 And I dunno why, because I was a hundred percent sure I was out before. And then all of a sudden I was a hundred percent in.”<\/p>\n

He continued, “If I’m really honest, I’d announced Logan was my last, and then I went to see the Deadpool<\/em> movie and I was 20 minutes in. I was like, ‘Christmas.’ First of all, I loved the movie, but all I could see was Nick Nolte<\/strong>, Eddie Murphy<\/strong> in 48 Hours<\/em>. I was like, this is something I haven’t done, we haven’t done, with the character. That’s the kind of dynamic we haven’t had before. But then I just put it aside. I was like, ‘No, no, no, I’m done.’ And then we made Logan<\/em>, I was super happy with her, but all because of this device they have in the Marvel world of moving around timelines, now we can go back because, you know, it’s science. So I don’t have to screw with the Logan<\/em> timeline, which was important to me. And I think probably to the fans too.”<\/p>\n<\/p><\/div>\n
