\n <\/figcaption><\/figure>\nAmanda, a self-described \u201cbeer nerd,\u201d said Host & Toast aims to solve a December-specific problem. \u201cA lot of holiday brews lean towards emphasizing a flavor that people associate with the holidays, as opposed to something that you would want to drink with holiday food,\u201d she told me. \u201cHoliday food tends to be rich and a little on the heavy side\u2014so we wanted to create a brew that counteracted that with acidity and some spice.\u201d<\/p>\n
When picking a partner to help create her ideal holiday brew, Amanda didn\u2019t have to go beyond her kitchen. \u201cWe always have Athletic in our fridge at home,\u201d she says, \u201cand we feel like they\u2019ve been the most interesting non-alcoholic brewery\u2014the one that\u2019s created the best quality brews and most dynamic iterations.\u201d<\/p>\n
To get Host & Toast off the ground, Amanda first met with Athletic Brewing co-founder and Chief Product Officer, John Walker at the non-alcoholic stalwart\u2019s flagship brewery in Milford, Connecticut. \u201cIt smells amazing there,\u201d Amanda said. \u201cIt actually smells like grain\u2014you feel like you\u2019re in a silo.\u201d<\/p>\n
During her visit, John and Amanda landed on the brew style as well as its primary flavors. \u201cWe settled on a brew with Meyer Lemon and Grains of Paradise,\u201d Amanda said, citing Meyer Lemon\u2019s floral notes and Grains of Paradise pepperiness as each ingredient\u2019s strength.<\/p>\n
From there, John and his team went to work\u2014mixing up an initial batch of the Belgian-style NA beer so that he, Amanda, and Food52\u2019s general manager, Jojo (another beer fanatic), could review their concept. \u201cIt was good, but we both agreed it needed more bite,\u201d John told me.<\/p>\n
So, John\u2019s team doubled the Grains of Paradise, brewed another batch, and, again, sent it out for review. This time, they nailed it\u2014transforming Amanda\u2019s vision into something you can crack, pour, and sip at any holiday feast or gathering. And the best part? It can be mixed into an NA cocktail, too.<\/p>\n
