The \u2018Rocket Man\u2019 singer, 77, was playing a gig in Greensboro, North Carolina, when the incident happened \u2013 which sparked panic among him backing musicians and team as it left him unconscious with blood pouring down his face before he had to be hauled into the wings for medical treatment.<\/p>\n
In an extract from Elton\u2019s book \u2018Farewell Yellow Brick Road\u2019 reported by RadarOnline.com, he said about being struck in the temple with the drug pipe chucked at him from the crowd: \u201cFans have often thrown things onstage when I\u2019m playing, but usually it\u2019s been something reasonably soft. Not in Greensboro.<\/p>\n
\u201cAs we ploughed through a rendition of \u2018Burn Down the Mission\u2019, someone hurled a metal hash pipe toward the stage from the crowd. I didn’t see it coming.<\/p>\n
\u201cThe silver pipe smashed against my temple, drawing blood, and I completely blacked out. <\/p>\n
\n\u201cThe band kept playing because it took them a second to realise what had happened.<\/p>\n
\n\u201cThey told me later they thought I\u2019d been shot because they saw blood pouring down my face.\u201d<\/p>\n
\nElton added his bodyguard at the time Jim Morris, who was a former Mr Universe, dragged him to the side of the stage before a paramedic bandaged his head.<\/p>\n
\nThe Grammy winner recently shocked fans after announcing at the West End premiere of \u2018The Devil Wears Prada\u2019 alongside his husband, David Furnish, he was unable to watch the performance as he\u2019s \u201clost\u201d his sight following an eye infection over the summer.<\/p>\n
\nSpeaking at the London showing, he told fans: \u201cI\u2019ve lost my eyesight and cannot see the stage.<\/p>\n
\n\u201cAs some of you may know, I have had issues, and now I have lost my sight. <\/p>\n
\n\u201cI haven\u2019t been able to see the performance but I have enjoyed it. <\/p>\n
\n\u201cTo my husband, who\u2019s been my rock because I haven\u2019t been able to come to many of the previews… it\u2019s hard for me to see it, but I love to hear it, and it sounded good tonight, OK. <\/p>\n
\n\u201cThank you for coming!\u201d<\/p>\n
