{"id":136620,"date":"2024-12-05T12:30:31","date_gmt":"2024-12-05T12:30:31","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/entertainment.runfyers.com\/index.php\/2024\/12\/05\/biden-administration-proposes-passenger-compensation-for-flight-disruptions-the-points-guy\/"},"modified":"2024-12-05T12:30:31","modified_gmt":"2024-12-05T12:30:31","slug":"biden-administration-proposes-passenger-compensation-for-flight-disruptions-the-points-guy","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/entertainment.runfyers.com\/index.php\/2024\/12\/05\/biden-administration-proposes-passenger-compensation-for-flight-disruptions-the-points-guy\/","title":{"rendered":"Biden administration proposes passenger compensation for flight disruptions &#8211; The Points Guy"},"content":{"rendered":"<p> <br \/>\n<\/p>\n<div>\n<p>Even as the Biden administration prepares to leave office in just over a month, it&#8217;s getting the ball rolling on possible new rules that could mean compensation for passengers when a flight is canceled, changed or delayed and it&#8217;s the airline&#8217;s fault.<\/p>\n<p>The U.S. Department of Transportation issued an advance notice of proposed rulemaking Thursday that could eventually require carriers to compensate passengers at least $200 when their flight is disrupted by three hours or more, in cases where the disruption is deemed the airline&#8217;s responsibility.<\/p>\n<p>Passengers could be eligible for higher compensation levels when there&#8217;s a longer disruption.<\/p>\n<p>The proposed rules, if ultimately finalized, would bring U.S. passenger rights more closely in line with those afforded to consumers across the Atlantic under the provision <a href=\"https:\/\/thepointsguy.com\/airline\/guide-eu261-flight-compensation\/\" rel=\"noopener\" target=\"_blank\">known as EU261.<\/a><\/p>\n<p>&#8220;This action we&#8217;re announcing is another step forward into a better era for commercial air travel\u2014where the flying public is better protected and passengers aren&#8217;t expected to bear the cost of disruptions caused by airlines,&#8221; Transportation Secretary Pete Buttigieg said in a statement announcing the news.<\/p>\n<p>Here&#8217;s the catch, though: Thursday&#8217;s notice of proposed rulemaking only starts the consideration process for the potential passenger compensation rules. SEAN CUDAHY\/THE POINTS GUY<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Passengers facing disruptions of between six and nine hours could be compensated between $375 and $525, with payments of at least $750 for passengers whose trips are delayed by nine hours or more.<\/p>\n<p>The DOT also announced it&#8217;s considering formalizing passenger protections for meals, unexpected hotel stays and ground transportation costs when stranded\u2014 as well as more stringent rules for rebooking passengers when there&#8217;s a disruption.<\/p>\n<p>These compensation requirements would apply in the event of &#8220;controllable&#8221; disruptions \u2014 in other words, flight problems deemed to be the airline&#8217;s responsibility (think maintenance and tech outages, but not bad weather).<\/p>\n<p><a id=\"building-on-existing-protections\" class=\"jsx-2362441780 anchor\"\/><\/p>\n<h2 class=\"jsx-2362441780\">Building on existing protections<\/h2>\n<p>Several of the largest U.S. airlines have already promised coverage for meals, impromptu hotel stays and transit to and from the airport when there&#8217;s a &#8220;controllable&#8221; delay or cancellation. Those guarantees are spelled out through a <a href=\"https:\/\/thepointsguy.com\/news\/airline-flight-delay-cancellation-policies\/\" rel=\"noopener\" target=\"_blank\">federal dashboard<\/a> created by the DOT in recent years.
