Lily Allen<\/a> believes it is inevitable she would end up an addict.<\/p>\n <\/p>\n
Lily Allen has been sober for five years<\/p>\n
The ‘Not Fair’ hitmaker has been sober for five years but as many of her earliest memories involve being around drugs and alcohol, she believes addiction “runs deep” within her genes and she’d always have end up out of control eventually.<\/p>\n
She told The Times newspaper: \u201cI think that addiction runs deep in my family, so self-medicating was going to be on the cards. For me, it didn\u2019t really feel like an \u2018if\u2019, it was a \u2018when\u2019.”<\/p>\n
The 39-year-old star hit rock bottom after her marriage to Sam Cooper – the father of her children Ethel, 13, and 11-year-old Marnie – broke down in 2016 and she even considered trying heroin.<\/p>\n
She admitted: \u201cI\u2019d sort of exhausted all of my options in terms of my outlets for acting out. I was engaging in pretty crazy sex stuff, drug stuff, alcohol. I would sit there in my bed and think, \u2018Maybe now\u2019s the time for heroin because nothing\u2019s working any more.\u2019 Luckily I didn\u2019t get there, because I wouldn\u2019t be here right now.\u201d<\/p>\n
\nAnd Lily’s lowest point came when she turned up to Sam’s house after he embarked on a new relationship.<\/p>\n
\nShe said: \u201cI drank myself into oblivion. I went over to his house and started screaming at him, woke the kids up, you know, really distressed the children.<\/p>\n
\n\u201cThey remember that. And they know that I was under the influence then, and that it\u2019s important that Mummy avoids getting into those situations.\u201d<\/p>\n
\nThe ‘Miss Me’ podcaster is pleased her sobriety has now given her kids safety.<\/p>\n
\nShe said: \u201cMy kids feel safe. That\u2019s the main thing for me. I felt very unsafe in my childhood, and my kids feel safe.\u201d<\/p>\n
\nAnd the youngsters even “monitor” Lily’s recovery, checking in to see if she has attended her regular Alcoholics Anonymous (AA) meetings, in person at weekends and online during the week.<\/p>\n
\nShe said: “They kind of monitor me. Ethel sometimes will be like, \u2018Aren\u2019t you going to one of your meetings?\u2019 \u2018I did one online this morning.\u2019 \u2018Are you sure?\u2019 They know that it takes work, and that it\u2019s something that I have to prioritise.\u201d<\/p>\n
\nBut while Lily’s husband of four years, David Harbour, has been sober for over 20 years, it isn’t a topic they discuss.<\/p>\n
\nShe admitted: \u201cWe don\u2019t really talk about it.\u201d<\/p>\n
