A host of Canadian media companies filed a lawsuit against OpenAI today, alleging \u201cinappropriate and illegal\u201d use of their journalism to power the company\u2019s GPT model, Reuters<\/em> reports<\/a>. It\u2019s the latest salvo fired by the media in its fight against AI companies that have scraped large swaths of the open web to train their large-language models. <\/p>\n<\/div>\n The suit was filed by several leading Canadian media companies, including the owners of the National Post<\/em> and Toronto Star<\/em>, The Globe and Mail<\/em>, The Canadian Press<\/em>, and CBC\/Radio-Canada. The group alleges that OpenAI infringed on its copyrights when training its models, like ChatGPT, without seeking permission or offering compensation. <\/p>\n<\/div>\n \u201cOpenAI\u2019s public statements that it is somehow fair or in the public interest for them to use other companies\u2019 intellectual property for their own commercial gain is wrong,\u201d National Post <\/em>owner Postmedia said in a statement<\/a>. \u201cJournalism is in the public interest. OpenAI using other companies\u2019 journalism for their own commercial gain is not. It\u2019s illegal.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/div>\n \u201cWe collaborate closely with news publishers, including in the display, attribution and links to their content in ChatGPT search, and offer them easy ways to opt out should they so desire,\u201d OpenAI spokesperson Jason Deutrom said <\/em>in a statement. <\/p>\n<\/div>\n
