There\u2019s no shortage of weird traditions in sports<\/a>, from the Detroit Red Wings\u2019 octopus throw to the Taylor University \u201cSilent Night\u201d game. But none is more iconic than the late John Madden<\/strong><\/a>\u2019s celebratory turkey leg.<\/p>\n

Someone just forgot to tell Jason Garrett<\/strong>\u2019s wife about it.<\/p>\n

Jason and his wife, Brill Garrett<\/strong><\/a>, have known each other since college, when Jason was the quarterback for the Princeton Tigers\u2019 football team in 1985. Fast forward to 1994 when Jason\u2019s Dallas Cowboys defeated Brett Favre<\/strong><\/a>\u2019s Green Bay Packers on Thanksgiving Day.<\/p>\n

Jason was Madden\u2019s MVP of the game and earned the celebratory turkey leg, which stayed in his freezer for well over a decade, the now-NBC analyst revealed<\/a> during the Thanksgiving Day broadcast of the Packers\u2019 game against the Miami Dolphins.<\/p>\n

\n\t\t\tTravis Kelce and his brother, Jason Kelce, turned Us into certified 92%ers in 2023. The athletes launched their \u201cNew Heights\u201d podcast in 2022, and the show\u2019s popularity took off ahead of the 2023 Super Bowl as Travis and Jason\u2019s respective teams, the Kansas City Chiefs and Philadelphia Eagles, prepared to play one another in the [\u2026]\t\t<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

\u201cI had it in the freezer. It was in tin foil,\u201d he told play-by-play man Mike Tirico<\/strong>. \u201cI probably had it for 15 years, then we finally moved. I called my wife the other day and said, \u2018do we still have the turkey leg?\u2019 She said \u2018no, it\u2019s long gone.\u2019\u201d<\/p>\n

Few would blame Brill for throwing out 15-year-old poultry, but in a way it\u2019s still sad to see another piece of Madden\u2019s legacy disappear. The legendary football-coach-turned-TV-personality died in 2021 at age 85. The namesake of one of the most popular sports video games in the world, Madden won 16 Emmy Awards and was inducted into the Pro Football Hall of Fame in 2006.<\/p>\n

The turkey leg award originated in 1989 when Madden decided the MVP of the Thanksgiving Day game he was calling between the Philadelphia Eagles and Dallas Cowboys deserved a prize. He presented the inaugural award to Eagles linebacker Reggie White<\/strong>, and the tradition quickly took hold.<\/p>\n

The next year, he gave the turkey leg to the Cowboys\u2019 Emmitt Smith<\/strong>. When Madden remarked that he wanted to give out six legs \u2013 one to Smith and one each to his five offensive linemen, Joe Pat Fieseler<\/strong>, owner of Harvey\u2019s Barbecue Pit in Texas, created a six-legged turkey, further adding to the award\u2019s popularity.<\/p>\n
