Grey\u2019s Anatomy<\/em> star Sarah Drew<\/strong><\/a> has spoken out about how \u201cdamaging\u201d it was when online trolls viciously criticized her looks during her first big acting role in Everwood<\/em>.<\/p>\n

Drew, now 44, was in her early twenties when she landed the part of shy bookworm Hannah in the WB family drama \u2014 and she says that, although social media wasn\u2019t yet booming, she still found fans calling her \u201cugly\u201d online.<\/p>\n

\u201cEverwood<\/em> was my first show ever, and I got addicted, there was no social media yet, but there were forums and message boards,\u201d she said on a recent episode of the \u201cBroad Ideas\u201d podcast, hosted by Rachel Bilson<\/strong><\/a> and Olivia Allen<\/strong>. \u201cIt\u2019s the worst thing ever. It was so bad for me. I came on to play the ugly wallflower best friend of Emily VanCamp. I had glasses and frizzy hair and not a stitch of makeup. I was the ugly one, the ugly duckling.\u201d<\/p>\n

Drew, now best known for her role as April Kepner in Grey\u2019s Anatomy<\/em>, says that there were some kinder comments too \u2014\u00a0but it\u2019s the negative ones that she vividly remembers \u201cword for word,\u201d citing \u201cSarah Drew is so ugly that the television cracks every time she steps in front of it\u201d as one example. \u201cIt hurt so badly,\u201d she recalled.<\/p>\n

Prior to her Everwood<\/em> role, Drew had worked as a voice actress as Stacy in the cult MTV animation, Daria<\/em>, so suddenly having her appearance scrutinized online came as a huge shock.<\/p>\n

\u201cI grew up never considering whether I was pretty or not,\u201d she said. \u201cIt just wasn\u2019t a thing we talked about. My mom is a scientist and, just, makeup wasn\u2019t worn. Hair, nobody cared about it, nobody cared about fashion. I never considered whether I was one of the pretty people in the world or not. All of a sudden I was like, \u2018Am I an ugly person? I guess maybe I\u2019m an ugly person.\u2019\u201d<\/p>\n
