Despite being one of Hollywood\u2019s most conventionally attractive stars<\/a>, Luke Evans<\/strong> admits he still struggles with body image issues.<\/p>\n

\u201cI\u2019m not massively confident about a lot of things about me, but I\u2019ve learned to deal with it and ignore it and understand why and process it,\u201d Evans, 45, explained on the Wednesday, November 27, episode of the \u201cHow to Fail With Elizabeth Day\u201d<\/a> podcast. \u201cIt doesn\u2019t go away.\u201d<\/p>\n

While explaining his lingering anxiety, Evans detailed a recent trip to the beach that left him hesitant to remove his shirt.<\/p>\n

\u201cI\u2019ve been on a beach just recently and I didn\u2019t want to take my T-shirt off,\u201d the Welsh actor and singer explained. \u201cI know I shouldn\u2019t feel like that, but, you know, we are sensitive creatures.\u201d<\/p>\n

He continued, \u201cI did finally take my T-shirt off on the beach, but it took me about three Long Island iced teas and a bit of confidence\u2026 and then I took my top off.\u201d<\/p>\n

Evans doesn\u2019t believe that he is alone in his feelings regarding his body, and claimed that it\u2019s not only a \u201ccommon\u201d experience but that it\u2019s \u201cimportant for people to know that I outwardly present this strong character, but I suffer with insecurities and lack of confidence and self-worth and all those things.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cThere\u2019s a little boy inside of me \u2014 we all carry our little kids, our little people, [and] they\u2019re with us all of our lives,\u201d he added. \u201cThe one I carry was bullied and I didn\u2019t like who he was and I have that with me now, but as an adult I understand it and so it doesn\u2019t consume me. It doesn\u2019t stop me from doing stuff.\u201d<\/p>\n

Evans, a proud gay man<\/a>, said he was bullied as a child, noting that while he knew he was \u201cdifferent,\u201d he didn\u2019t fully understand what that meant at 6 and 7 years old.<\/p>\n

\u201cKids can be brutal,\u201d he said. \u201cI was an only child [with] very pacifist parents \u2014 not aggressive at all, you walk away from a fight, you don\u2019t swear \u2026 I wasn\u2019t ready for the bullies. I was the perfect target.\u201d<\/p>\n

Evans went on to explain that the trauma of being bullied as a child manifested in anxiety over his physical appearance, in part because he was trying to understand why he was being singled out.<\/p>\n

\u201cAs a kid, I questioned, \u2018Why me? Why not the other boys? Why me?\u2019 It\u2019s a terrible thing for a kid to have to think, \u2018What\u2019s wrong with me?\u2019\u201d he added. \u201cI started to critique my own physicality.\u201d<\/p>\n

Evans said he also questioned his \u201cbig ears,\u201d wondered if his \u201cvoice was maybe a bit high\u201d and if a \u201cgesture was a giveaway\u201d in regards to his sexuality.<\/p>\n
