The first season of Cruel Intentions<\/em> ended with a controversial hookup \u2014 but where does the show go from here?<\/p>\n

Based on Pierre Choderlos de Laclos<\/strong>\u2018 novel Les Liaisons Dangereuses,<\/em> Prime Video\u2019s version is the first time the story has been told<\/a> on the small screen. The original 1999 film followed Annette (Reese Witherspoon<\/strong>) as she became a pawn in a sexual conquest wager between step siblings Sebastian (Ryan Phillippe<\/strong>) and Kathryn (Sarah Michelle Gellar<\/strong>).<\/p>\n

The TV adaptation, which premiered on Thursday, November 21, replaced a New York prep school for a Washington D.C college where the two manipulative step siblings<\/a>, now named Lucien and Caroline, are ready to do anything to maintain their status. Zac Burgess, Sarah Catherine Hook <\/strong>and Savannah Lee Smith<\/strong> play the titular roles while Sara Silva, John Harlan Kim, Khobe Clarke, Sean Patrick Thomas<\/strong> and Brooke Lena Johnson<\/strong> make up the rest of the cast.<\/p>\n

While Prime Video\u2019s Cruel Intentions<\/em> recreated many iconic moments from the movie<\/a>, it also strayed notably from the original plot. The first season ended with Annie (Smith) pledging sorority Delta Phi Pi but then questioning Caroline\u2019s (Hook) intentions.<\/p>\n

\n\t\t\tWhile Prime Video\u2019s Cruel Intentions is a new version of the story, the show still recreated many iconic scenes from the classic film. Based on a modern retelling of Pierre Choderlos de Laclos\u2018 novel Les Liaisons Dangereuses, the original Cruel Intentions film was released in 1999. The movie told the story of Annette (Reese Witherspoon), [\u2026]\t\t<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

Lucien (Burgess), meanwhile, broke up with Annie and got revenge on Caroline by sleeping with her mother (his stepmother). He appeared to send Caroline the footage but the audience didn\u2019t get to see her reaction \u2014 yet.<\/p>\n

Showrunners Sara Goodman <\/strong>and Phoebe Fisher<\/strong> exclusively told Us Weekly<\/em> how that bombshell hookup will change the trajectory<\/a> of Lucien and Caroline\u2019s relationship.<\/p>\n

\u201cThere are a lot of ways to go,\u201d Goodman teased. \u201cAnd I think that these are two people who\u2019ve behaved incredibly badly to each other. We\u2019ll have to wait to see [in season 2] what the breaking points really are for them.\u201d<\/p>\n

Fisher highlighted how there is \u201ca lot of depth of feeling<\/a>\u201d between Lucien and Caroline, adding, \u201cWe\u2019ll see. Is it beyond repair? We don\u2019t know.\u201d<\/p>\n

The pair also discussed finding the balance between paying tribute to the movie and creating something new with the show.<\/a><\/p>\n

\u201cPart of the fun of getting to take on this project is getting the opportunity to expand on all of these characters and all of these dynamics that we\u2019ve set up in the pilot while still paying homage to the original source material,\u201d Fisher said before Goodman added, \u201cWe didn\u2019t want to alienate fans of the movie. We\u2019re fans of the movie so we definitely wanted to keep the tone and those little references that we all love.\u201d<\/p>\n

In the 1999 movie, Phillippe\u2019s character, Sebastian, saved Annette\u2019s life but died in her place<\/a>. The first season of the TV adaptation ended on a more positive note when Lucien left Caroline and Annie behind to seemingly try to get control of his life back.<\/p>\n

\u201cIt depends how many seasons we get!\u201d Fisher told Us<\/em> about Lucien possibly avoiding the same fate as his movie counterpart. Meanwhile, executive producer Pavun Shetty<\/em> reminded viewers that Cruel Intentions<\/em> isn\u2019t looking to copy the events of the film.<\/a><\/p>\n

\u201cIt\u2019s a different show. We\u2019re not retelling the movie at all. It\u2019s definitely the next chapter of the movie,\u201d he shared. \u201cSo we\u2019re taking what was there but really creating a whole new story. Similar things that people loved about the movie will be there and people who know the movie well will recognize things, but the stories are very different.\u201d<\/p>\n

In the 90s cult classic, which is a teen version of the French film Dangerous Liaisons, Sebastian\u2019s (Ryan Phillippe) sultry stepsister Kathryn Merteuil (Sarah Michelle Gellar) challenges him to \u201cdeflower\u201d the new school headmaster\u2019s [\u2026]\t\t<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

Will Scott and Blaise Get Back Together?<\/h3>\n

Scott (Clarke) and Blaise (Kim) ended things on a bad note \u2014 but that doesn\u2019t mean it is over.<\/a><\/p>\n

\u201cI\u2019m rooting for Blaise and Scott,\u201d Burgess shared with Us<\/em> about watching the show as a fan. \u201cI\u2019m just like, please make it work.\u201d<\/p>\n

Clarke felt the same way after helping bring the fictional couple to life, adding, \u201cScott prides himself on his forgiveness and I think he will eventually do that for Blaise. I also think Scott\u2019s identity is more clear to him now, so he\u2019s free to be more of himself and hide less. It would be exciting to see what comfort that\u2019ll bring to his character.\u201d<\/p>\n

Where Does Lucien\u2019s Story Go After He Slept With His Stepmother?<\/h3>\n

\u201cThe ending for Lucien is pretty dramatic. It leaves the playing field entirely open,\u201d Burgess teased. \u201cAnd given the opportunity for a second season, I\u2019m incredibly intrigued to see what Sarah and Phoebe come up with. Anything could happen. I\u2019ve got so many ideas in my head.\u201d<\/p>\n

While Lucien\u2019s hookup with Claudia (Claire Forlani<\/strong>) hasn\u2019t been revealed<\/a> to everyone on the show, Johnson and Smith are confident it won\u2019t stay a secret for long.<\/p>\n

\u201cBeatrice writes about [these things], so that\u2019ll be interesting if that gets thrown in there,\u201d Johnson told Us<\/em>. \u201cShe has a platform for it.\u201d<\/p>\n

Johnson also expressed interest in seeing her character Beatrice, Annie and CeCe (Silva) continue to build a friendship in spite of Caroline and Lucien\u2019s chaos. Smith had similar thoughts about how Annie will keep drifting from Caroline and Lucien.<\/a><\/p>\n

\u201cAnnie already has reason not to trust Lucian and is already kind skeptical about him,\u201d she shared. \u201cSo I think that would only encourage the hesitation more.\u201d<\/p>\n

While chatting with Us<\/em>, Goodman noted that it isn\u2019t clear \u201cwhat anyone knows\u201d<\/a> about the hookup, which leaves the writers\u2019 room with plenty of options.<\/p>\n

Could There Be Cameos From the Original Cast?<\/h3>\n

The first season featured Sean Patrick Thomas<\/strong> playing another teacher, Professor Caldwell, after originally portraying music tutor Ronald Cifford in the 1999 film. The door is open for more cameos<\/a> \u2014 especially after Selma Blair<\/strong> previously revealed she wasn\u2019t asked to appear on the show yet.<\/p>\n

\u201cObviously I would be so honored if she called,\u201d Silva, who plays a version of Blair\u2019s character Cecilia, told Us<\/em>. \u201cI think she\u2019s so iconic and cool.\u201d<\/p>\n

Thomas also showed his support for the cameo,<\/a> adding, \u201cI don\u2019t have the final say on that, but absolutely. She\u2019d be my No. 1 person that I\u2019d love to work with.\u201d<\/p>\n
