Lucy Lawless isn’t a fantasy fan<\/p>\n
The 56-year-old actress made her breakthrough when she played a character named Xena in \u2018Hercules’ and then landed her own spin-off show, \u2018Xena: Warrior Princess\u2019 \u2013 which ran for six seasons from September 1995 until June 2001 \u2013 but admitted it was a very unexpected move for her, not least because she struggled with stunt work and action scenes,<\/p>\n
She told Big Issue magazine: \u201cMy heroes were all stage actors. I used to buy \u2018Plays and Players\u2019 magazine and saw myself as one day coming to London and doing theatre. London was the centre of that world. <\/p>\n
\u201cThen I got sucked into fantasy action TV \u2013 now that was a crazy U-turn.<\/p>\n
\u201cIt was never the plan. And it was murder having to do all those stunts.<\/p>\n
\n\u201cI was known in school as Unco, for uncoordinated, so it was a horrible shock to do all the fight scenes in \u2018Xena: Warrior Princess\u2019.<\/p>\n
\n\u201cI didn\u2019t watch fantasy or sci-fi, I\u2019m just not into it.<\/p>\n
\n\u201cI\u2019m into real people and exploring humanity.<\/p>\n
\n\u201cI will always watch Judi Dench rather than people with pointy ears.\u201d<\/p>\n
\nAnd Lucy is still amazed at the huge cultural impact \u2018Xena\u2026\u2019 had.<\/p>\n
\nShe said: \u201cI was spirited away to Hollywood and doing cheeseball TV. There\u2019s nothing wrong with cheese, I love cheese. But looking back, it\u2019s not \u2018The Sopranos\u2019 is it?<\/p>\n
\n\u201cBut the fact Xena had such an impact on people\u2019s lives would have blown my mind.<\/p>\n
\n\u201cIt had this effect down the line of giving courage to people. So it\u2019s an honour to be an LGBT+ icon and part of something that makes people feel safer and more valuable.\u201d<\/p>\n
