The anticipation for Matlock<\/em>\u2018s season finale is bigger than ever \u2014 but what should viewers expect?<\/p>\n

During an exclusive interview with Us Weekly<\/em>, director and executive producer Kat Coiro<\/strong> teased how the hit CBS series will wrap up its first season.<\/a><\/p>\n

\u201cI will say that it leaves all of our characters in positions where they have big decisions to make,\u201d she hinted. \u201cAs the show progresses, we really get to know every one of our main characters, and they\u2019re all really a huge part of moving the show forward.\u201d<\/p>\n

There\u2019s already been a shift in the newest episode, which aired on Thursday, November 14. Matty (Kathy Bates<\/strong>) considered quitting her job at Jacobson Moore \u2014 and abandoning her mission to find which attorney hid evidence that could have saved her daughter\u2019s life. Before she told her decision to Olympia (Skye P. Marshall<\/strong>), Julian (Jason Ritter<\/strong>) rewarded Matty for her hard work<\/a> by bringing her on a case involving Big Pharma.<\/p>\n

\n\t\t\tMatlock threw viewers for a loop with that shocking premiere plot twist \u2014 but what comes next? Kathy Bates\u2018 character, Madeline \u201cMatty\u201d Matlock, was introduced during the sneak peek of the series, which aired on Sunday, September 22. Despite sharing the same last name as the iconic Matlock series from the \u201980s, Matty appeared to [\u2026]\t\t<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

\u201cThis was very pivotal. I do think after her health scare, there was a part of Matty that was ready to throw in the towel. From the pilot, one thing we discussed was how she thought that she was going to come in and it was going to be challenging and it was going to be hard,\u201d Coiro noted. \u201cBut she didn\u2019t anticipate her deep connection to the people that she\u2019s working with. From Olympia to Billy to Sarah \u2014 and even the people in the cases she\u2019s working on. She\u2019s such an empathetic person that it becomes quite all-consuming.\u201d<\/p>\n

Matty had to hit a point where she felt \u201cemotionally\u201d exhausted<\/a>. \u201cWhat happens at the end of that episode feels like a message from the universe that she has to keep going,\u201d Coiro added. \u201cAnd I do think she was ready to give up.\u201d<\/p>\n

Introduced as Madeline \u201cMatty\u201d Matlock, the titular character initially stands out because she shares the same last name as the iconic Matlock from the \u201980s series. Matty, meanwhile, is a former lawyer hoping to get hired at a prestigious law firm after falling on hard times \u2014 or so it seems.<\/p>\n

\n\t\t\tIt\u2019s the busiest time of the TV year with shows such as Grotesquerie and The Perfect Couple kicking off the fall season. The Perfect Couple, which is based on Elin Hilderbrand\u2018s novel of the same name, centers around a wedding weekend in Nantucket that doesn\u2019t go exactly as planned. Most of the details have been [\u2026]\t\t<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

The series later revealed that it was all an act. Matty is actually the wealthy Madeline Kingston, who went undercover at the firm to track down who is responsible for her daughter\u2019s death. The current suspects on Matty\u2019s list include Olympia, Julian and Senior (Beau Bridges)<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

While Matty has slowly been chipping away at the case, there\u2019s no rush to get all major questions answered by the end of the season. Luckily, Matlock<\/em> has already been renewed by CBS<\/a> for a second season.<\/p>\n
