The password manager NordPass has once again released its annual list<\/a> of the world\u2019s most popular passwords \u2014 and the lack of creativity is just a little disheartening. For the second year in a row, \u201c123456\u201d has been crowned the most common password.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n The same numbers topped the chart five out of the six times NordPass has compiled its lists, only to be usurped by the famed \u201cpassword\u201d in 2022. But once you get past all the QWERTYs, ABCs, and 123s, we get a little insight into what humanity thinks about when creating the line of text that protects their most personal information. <\/p>\n<\/div>\n There are those who choose \u201ciloveyou\u201d and those who opt for \u201cfuckyou.\u201d Others have distinct interests, like \u201cpokemon,\u201d \u201cnaruto,\u201d \u201csamsung,\u201d and \u201cminecraft.\u201d Many more are just names, like \u201cmichelle\u201d or \u201cashley,\u201d but at least some people make a half-assed attempt at creating a secure \u201cP@ssw0rd\u201d (which still takes less than one second to crack, by the way). <\/p>\n<\/div>\n I had a bit of fun looking through the small differences in passwords across different countries, too. The UK\u2019s list, for example, has \u201cliverpool\u201d near the top, while Australia\u2019s has \u201clizottes\u201d (a restaurant and live music venue that is now apparently called Flamingos Live). Other countries, like Finland and Hungary, have \u201csalasana\u201d and \u201cjelszo\u201d toward the top of their lists \u2014 both translate to \u201cpassword.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/div>\n To create its list, NordPass said it used a 2.5TB database of \u201cpublicly available sources,\u201d some of which were found on the dark web. Many of these passwords take milliseconds for a hacker to figure out, so if your password is on this list, you should probably change it to something a little more creative than \u201csecret.\u201d Or maybe even try passkeys!<\/a><\/p>\n<\/div>\n
