It\u2019s a subject everyone is either sick of, or sick over. Not talking about it feels weird and wrong; talking about it feels tedious and noisy and hopeless.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paywall\">Supposedly there was an online petition for <em>SNL<\/em> not to go the mournful route it had in the 2016 post-election cold open, when <strong>Kate McKinnon<\/strong>\u2014who\u2019d spent the year playing Democratic nominee <strong>Hillary Clinton<\/strong>\u2014sang a version of Leonard Cohen\u2018s \u201cHallelujah\u201d at the piano. (I loved that performance, for what it\u2019s worth, and put it on par for emotional impact with <em>SNL<\/em>\u2019s first post 9\/11 show\u2014when everybody\u2019s then-favorite mayor, <strong>Rudolph Giuliani<\/strong>, stood flanked by NYC firefighters and police officers.) Would <strong>Maya Rudolph<\/strong>, who I hope at least had a good weepy phone call with Vice President <strong>Kamala Harris<\/strong> this week, appear? Would the cold open be somber or outraged or sincere? And what would even feel \u201cright,\u201d as every response right now feels exhausting and wrong?<\/p>\n<p class=\"paywall\">All to say, the cold open worked for me. It began with vets <strong>Kenan Thompson, Bowen Yang, Ego Nwodim<\/strong>, and <strong>Heidi Gardner<\/strong> speaking stone-faced to the camera, listing off the stunning premise of President-elect Trump\u2019s decisive win as if they were an HR department reading off a script. But then they all flipped the script and started marveling at the Emperor\u2019s fantastic wardrobe. Whatever the lamestream media\u2019s problem was with Trump, the <em>SNL<\/em> family has always had his back. (All except <strong>Michael Che<\/strong>, warned <strong>Colin Jost<\/strong>, spelling out his co-anchor\u2019s last name just in case Trump wanted to get to work on his enemies\u2019 list.) \u201cI was one of the proud 8% [of Black women] who voted for you,\u201d promised Nwodim. \u201cIf we find out someone here voted for Kamala, we\u2019ll rat them out so fast,\u201d said Yang. <strong>Sarah Sherman<\/strong> dangled their \u201cthree new disgusting cast members\u201d as scapegoats for him to exact revenge.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paywall\">Someone stuck poor <strong>James Austin Johnson<\/strong>, who I imagine was the drunkest cast member of all on Tuesday, in a \u201chot, jacked Trump\u201d muscle suit. \u201cHeil King,\u201d <strong>Marcello Hernandez<\/strong> praised. The only big laugh of the open was <strong>Dana Carvey<\/strong>\u2019s pivot from playing President <strong>Joe Biden<\/strong> to playing <strong>Elon Musk<\/strong>. He jumped around and threw his arms in the air <a href=\"https:\/\/www.vanityfair.com\/news\/story\/walz-election-experts-and-former-republican-officials-agree-theres-something-fishy-about-musks-pro-trump-lottery?srsltid=AfmBOorczmwLOEcqntewKsropQqUn6d4lOIuFKmVWECDcI2X8SIi2CQr\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">like a dipshit<\/a>\u2014I\u2019m going to miss you most of all, <strong>Governor Walz<\/strong>\u2014and then the cast treated the disaffected young men of America to a rendition of \u201cY.M.C.A.\u201d Good, tender chaos.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<p><br \/>\n<br \/><a href=\"https:\/\/www.vanityfair.com\/hollywood\/story\/saturday-night-live-bill-burr-recap\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Source link <\/a><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>This week\u2019s Saturday Night Live was proof that we\u2019re just not ready to process the election yet.
