More than\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/hajj-heat-deaths-mecca-saudi-arabia-pilgrimage-9f97aae1032b14ada29bbea7108195d3\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">1,300 people died<\/a>\u00a0as temperatures soared in Saudi Arabia during the annual pilgrimage to Mecca in June. At the time, the Northern Hemisphere was in the middle of its <a href=\"https:\/\/climate.copernicus.eu\/copernicus-summer-2024-hottest-record-globally-and-europe\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">hottest summer on record<\/a>, beating 2023. While that\u2019s based on a Copernicus analysis of data stretching back to 1940, separate\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.nature.com\/articles\/s41586-024-07512-y\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">research<\/a>\u00a0using markers in ancient tree rings found that the summer of 2023 in the Northern hemisphere was probably the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.theverge.com\/2024\/5\/14\/24155408\/tree-rings-hottest-summer-climate-change-nature-research\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">hottest in at least 2,000 years<\/a>. That might not sound like much, but it exceeds the most ambitious target set in the <a href=\"https:\/\/unfccc.int\/process-and-meetings\/the-paris-agreement\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Paris climate accord<\/a> \u2014 an international treaty to keep warming from surpassing 1.5 to 2 degrees Celsius over the long term. Our planet\u2019s climate remained relatively <a href=\"https:\/\/www.metoffice.gov.uk\/weather\/climate-change\/palaeoclimate?utm_source=pocket_shared\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">stable for the last 11,000 years<\/a> or so, supporting the rise of agriculture and civilization as we know it, until the industrial revolution. The Paris agreement aims to keep global temperatures within <a href=\"https:\/\/www.vox.com\/2014\/4\/22\/5551004\/two-degrees\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">roughly the same temperature range<\/a>.
