Australian breakdancer Raygun<\/strong><\/a> just announced that her first Olympics would be her last.<\/p>\n

Raygun, 37, revealed on Tuesday, November 5, that she is retiring from professional competition following her viral 2024 Paris Olympics<\/a> performance. \u201cI still break but I don\u2019t compete. I\u2019m not gonna compete anymore, no,\u201d the athlete, real name Rachael Gunn, shared during an interview on Australia\u2019s The Jimmy and Nath Show<\/em><\/a>.<\/p>\n

Raygun said that she planned to keep competing in the breakdancing world following the Olympics earlier this summer, but reactions to her performance at the Games have made it hard to do so.<\/p>\n

\u201cThat seems [like a] really difficult thing for me to do now, to approach a battle. I still dance and I still break, but that\u2019s like in my living room with the partner,\u201d she explained. \u201cI think the level of scrutiny that\u2019s gonna be there and, you know, people will be filming it and it will go online. And it\u2019s just not gonna mean the same thing. It\u2019s not going to be the same experience because of everything that\u2019s at stake.\u201d<\/p>\n

\n\t\t\tAustralian breaker Raygun is being praised for her bravery following her viral 2024 Paris Olympics performance, and even an Olympic judge is coming to her defense. \u201cIt\u2019s all about originality and it\u2019s all about bringing something new to the table and representing your country or region,\u201d Martin Gilian (a.k.a. MGbility), the chief breaking judge at [\u2026]\t\t<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

While fans won\u2019t be seeing Raygun back on the dance floor any time soon, she teased that she has \u201csome projects happening behind the scenes.\u201d She shared: \u201cIt\u2019s all, kind of, of the same sort of vibe of trying to bring more positivity, trying to encourage people to dance, to have fun and be creative and to be themselves, to be their authentic selves, whatever that might look like.\u201d<\/p>\n

Raygun was a social media sensation<\/a> at the Paris Olympics after she competed in the Games\u2019 first-ever breakdancing event. She failed to score any wins but left an impression on viewers with her unique dance moves.<\/p>\n

However, her Olympic debut was also met with criticism as some viewers compared her skill level to that of her fellow competitors. A petition<\/a> requesting transparency into Raygun\u2019s Olympics selection was launched by fans in August, suggesting that she \u201cmanipulated\u201d her way onto Team Australia and took a spot from more deserving breakdancers.<\/p>\n

The Australian breaking organization AUSBreak promptly shut down rumors<\/a> that Raygun cheated her way into the Olympics. \u201cWe condemn the global online harassment and bullying of Raygun,\u201d the group wrote in an August statement<\/a>. \u201cThe pressure to perform on the Olympic stage is immense, especially against the opponents in her particular group. We stand in solidarity with Raygun.\u201d<\/p>\n

\n\t\t\tAs Paris passes the torch to Los Angeles as the host of the 2028 Summer Olympics, the International Olympic Committee (IOC) has already adjusted the event schedule. In 2023, the IOC approved proposals for five new sports at the 2028 Olympics, some of which \u2014 including lacrosse and cricket \u2014 haven\u2019t been seen at the [\u2026]\t\t<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

Raygun broke her silence<\/a> on the backlash later that month. \u201cI really appreciate the positivity and I\u2019m glad I was able to bring some joy into your lives. That\u2019s what I hoped,\u201d she said in an August 15 Instagram video<\/a>. \u201cI didn\u2019t realize that that would also open the door to so much hate, which has frankly been pretty devastating. While I went out there and I had fun, I did take it very seriously. I worked my butt off, preparing for the Olympics and I gave my all, truly.\u201d<\/p>\n
