Kim Burgess is officially in her detective era on Chicago P.D.<\/em><\/a> \u2014 but that doesn\u2019t mean she\u2019s ready to be Hank Voight\u2019s right hand.<\/p>\n

\u201cI would like to inhabit that role, but differently,\u201d Marina Squerciati<\/strong><\/a>, who plays Burgess, exclusively told Us Weekly<\/em> on Monday, November 4, of her character\u2019s connection to Voight (Jason Beghe<\/strong><\/a>) after becoming a detective. \u201cI don\u2019t want to be his confidant. I don\u2019t want to fill a hole.\u201d<\/p>\n

Squerciati, 40, explained that Burgess doesn\u2019t \u201cfeel like he\u2019s [her] father figure,\u201d noting that many of Voight\u2019s former second in command officers have had intense relationships with him. (Sophia Bush<\/strong>\u2019s Erin Lindsay was partially raised by Voight and his late wife, while Tracy Spiridakos<\/strong>\u2019 Hailey Upton became a daughter-like figure<\/a> for Voight after his son\u2019s death.)<\/p>\n

\u201cI feel like equals is not the right word, but let me just use it here in that, like, they really respect each other and like each other,\u201d Squerciati said of Burgess and her boss<\/a>. \u201cIt would be interesting to explore now that she has the role of detective, what their relationship can be.\u201d<\/p>\n

During the Wednesday, November 6, episode of Chicago P.D<\/a>.,<\/em> Burgess aced her written and oral exams for detective before getting shadowed by an active detective to see if she would pass and get promoted.<\/p>\n

When Burgess took over a scene that linked back to a past Intelligence case, she turned to her team to help her solve it. While there were a few hiccups along the way \u2014 and Burgess ended up almost getting killed after splitting up from her mentor Suarez (Elizabeth Rodriguez<\/strong>) \u2014 she realized just how key Voight has been in her development. (Suarez claimed that Voight always covers Burgess\u2019 \u201cass\u201d as well as the rest of his team, which she said makes Burgess a little soft.)<\/p>\n

\u201cI think it\u2019s the first time that she understands this sort of protective shield that Voight has around the team,\u201d Squerciati told Us<\/em>, referring to Detective Suarez\u2019s jab. \u201cShe\u2019s never understood that she gets to be the cop she is because of who Voight is.\u201d<\/p>\n

The actress added that Suarez\u2019s harsh assessment \u201csort of robbed [her] of some of the joy of her win\u201d when making detective.<\/p>\n

Moving forward, Squerciati noted that Burgess will have a \u201cnagging voice\u201d about that safety net in the back of her mind now that she\u2019s a detective with the Intelligence Unit. Even with the doubts, Squerciati told Us<\/em> that there won\u2019t be much of a change in how Burgess works with her fianc\u00e9<\/a>, Adam Ruzek (Patrick Flueger<\/strong><\/a>), or the rest of the team.<\/p>\n

\u201cYou know when people are in a good relationship and they get married [and] people are like, \u2018What\u2019s different?\u2019 And you\u2019re like, \u2018Nothing.\u2019 It\u2019s exactly the same,\u201d Squerciati explained. \u201cThe team is so strong, and Burgess is so strong, I don\u2019t think anything\u2019s gonna change.\u201d<\/p>\n

Viewers first saw sparks fly between Burgess (Marina Squerciati) and Ruzek (Patrick Flueger) during season 1, episode 8, when Ruzek was in another relationship. \u201cThis is complete [\u2026]\t\t<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

Burgess will, however, have \u201cmore power.\u201d Squerciati noted that her longtime coworkers, including Ruzek and Kevin Atwater (LaRoyce Hawkins<\/strong><\/a>), are \u201cstrong enough\u201d to have a \u201cbadass boss.\u201d<\/p>\n
