Once you get bit by the acting bug, it\u2019s hard to step away from the business completely \u2013 and these celebrities prove it.<\/p>\n

After Kathy Bates<\/strong><\/a> surprised fans by announcing<\/a> that her starring role on the Matlock<\/em> reboot would be \u201cher last dance\u201d after an illustrious five-decade career in September 2024, the Academy Award winner backtracked on her comments one month later.<\/p>\n

\u201cI think people got confused and thought I was going to retire,\u201d she told People<\/em><\/a>. \u201cWhat I meant was, how can it get any better? I would love for this to keep going.\u201d<\/p>\n

Ahead of nabbing the titular role on Matlock<\/em> \u2013 a twist on the original series starring Andy Griffith<\/strong> \u2013 Bates told the outlet that she had thought about retiring because roles for women of her age were becoming scarce.<\/p>\n

\u201cI remember calling my agents and saying, \u2018I think maybe I want to go into, if not retirement, semi-retirement. If I can\u2019t afford to keep my house, I\u2019ll sell it and maybe go to New York,\u2019\u201d she recalled. \u201cThen this happened. I couldn\u2019t believe it.\u201d<\/p>\n

Jane Fonda<\/h3>\n

Fonda<\/a>, whose career began with a starring role in Tall Story<\/em> in 1960, famously announced her retirement from acting after 1991 after tying the knot with Ted Turner<\/strong>. The pair divorced after 10 years of marriage, and Fonda made her onscreen return in the 2005 rom-com Monster in Law<\/em>, which also stars Jennifer Lopez<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

\u201cI left for 15 years, when I married Ted Turner, and I did not think I was gonna come back, \u2019cause when I married him, I thought it\u2019d be forever,\u201d the actress told Entertainment Tonight<\/em><\/a> while promoting her comedy, 80 for Brady<\/em>, in 2023. \u201cBut I came back, and frankly, if anybody told me that at 85, I\u2019d be doing this kind of movie, I would have not believed them. So I feel very lucky.\u201d<\/p>\n

Since her early aughts return, Fonda has starred in countless productions, including Netflix\u2019s Grace and Frankie<\/em>, Georgia Rule<\/em> opposite Lindsay Lohan<\/strong>, This Is Where I Leave You<\/em>, The Newsroom<\/em>, Book Club<\/em> and its sequel and more.<\/p>\n

After Howard was asked what his next move was after the end of his hit show, Empire<\/em>, the actor said he planned on throwing in the towel on his acting career.<\/p>\n

\u201cI\u2019m done with acting. I\u2019m done pretending,\u201d he told Extra<\/em><\/a> in September 2019.<\/p>\n

Though he declared he was done with the industry, Howard went on to appear in numerous productions following the end of Empire<\/em>, including Cut Throat City<\/em>, The System<\/em> and The Best Man: Final Chapters<\/em>, which aired in 2022. While promoting The Best Man<\/em>, Howard claimed he was retiring again.<\/p>\n

\u201cThis is the end for me. This is the end for me. I don\u2019t know if it\u2019s the end for the rest of them,\u201d he told ET<\/em>, referring to his costars. \u201cI retired two years ago, for the most part. I was done.\u201d<\/p>\n

Since his second announcement, Howard has gone on to appear in numerous films, and starred on the Peacock mini-series Fight Night: The Million Dollar Heist<\/em>.<\/p>\n

Cameron Diaz<\/h3>\n

Diaz<\/a>, who rose to fame with her breakout role in The Mask<\/em> opposite Jim Carrey<\/strong> in 1994, went on to quickly become one of Hollywood\u2019s most sought-after actresses for rom-coms, dramas and more.<\/p>\n

After nearly two decades of starring roles in films like The Sweetest Thing<\/em>, There\u2019s Something About Mary<\/em>, Charlie\u2019s Angels<\/em>, Gangs of New York<\/em>, The Holiday<\/em> and Bad Teacher<\/em> \u2013 as well as voicing Fiona in all of the Shrek<\/em> movies<\/a> \u2013 Diaz appeared in three final films (The Other Woman<\/em>, Sex Tape<\/em> and Annie<\/em>) in 2014 before stepping away from the spotlight.<\/p>\n

Diaz announced her retirement in March 2018 during an interview with Entertainment Weekly<\/em> and her The Sweetest Thing<\/em> costars, Christina Applegate<\/strong> and Selma Blair<\/strong>. After Applegate described herself as \u201csemi-retired,\u201d Diaz replied, \u201cI\u2019m semi-retired too, and I am actually retired, so I would love to see you ladies.\u201d<\/p>\n

Though she later said she got out of acting to focus on her family and her personal life (she shares daughter Raddix and son Cardinal with husband Benji Madden<\/strong>), Diaz came out of retirement in 2022 when she signed on to star in Back in Action<\/em><\/a> opposite Jamie Foxx<\/strong>. The Netflix film is slated to premiere in January 2025.<\/p>\n

Kathy Bates<\/h3>\n

Though Bates has been a mainstay in the industry for more than 50 years, appearing in blockbuster giants like Titanic<\/em>, The Blind Side<\/em> and Misery<\/em> and starring on American Horror Story<\/em>, she was thinking about retiring after parts for women of her age were getting harder and harder to come by.<\/p>\n

As of October 2024, she stars on the Matlock<\/em> reboot, and said she would continue acting as long as the opportunities arise.<\/p>\n

Joe Pesci<\/h3>\n

Known for his roles in \u201990s classics like Goodfellas<\/em>, My Cousin Vinny<\/em>, Casino<\/em>, Home Alone<\/em>, Home Alone 2: Lost in New York<\/em> and Lethal Weapon 2, 3<\/em> and 4<\/em>, Pesci announced his decision to step away from acting in 1999.<\/p>\n

Despite wanting to focus on life out of the spotlight, Pesci made multiple cameos in productions like The Good Shepherd<\/em> and Love Ranch<\/em>, and ultimately returned to the big screen in 2019\u2019s The Irishman<\/em><\/a>. He also starred on Bupkis<\/em> opposite Pete Davidson<\/strong> in 2023, and appeared in Day of the Fight<\/em> that year.<\/p>\n

Mara Wilson<\/h3>\n

Wilson, who catapulted to child star fame with her roles in Mrs. Doubtfire<\/em>, Matilda<\/em> and Miracle on 34th Street<\/em>, stepped away from acting after 2000\u2019s Thomas and the Magic Railroad<\/em>.<\/p>\n
