Ratings-challenged American Idol<\/em><\/a> couldn\u2019t afford Miley Cyrus<\/strong><\/a>, so she suggested a \u201cbackup singer\u201d \u2014 Carrie Underwood<\/strong><\/a> \u2014 to take the judge\u2019s seat vacated by Katy Perry<\/strong><\/a>. Carrie, 41, got the gig after Miley, 31, demanded a salary<\/a> that matched or exceeded the whopping $25 million Katy had been pocketing, sources exclusively tell Life & Style<\/em>. \u201cBut Idol ratings have slid in the past few years, so they were looking for a more affordable option,\u201d a show source dishes.<\/p>\n

\u201cIt\u2019s well known internally Miley Cyrus was the network and the producers\u2019 first choice to replace Katy, but topping Katy\u2019s already high salary<\/a> was never on the table,\u201d a network insider says.<\/p>\n

The \u201cBefore He Cheats\u201d singer agreed to take $12 million<\/a> for the gig \u2014 on par with fellow judges Lionel Richie<\/strong> and Luke Bryan<\/strong>. \u201cCarrie really wanted to get on board with Idol<\/em>,\u201d a source reveals. \u201cMoney wasn\u2019t a big motivation for her, it was more getting off the road from touring and being able to spend more time with her family.\u201d Plus, she still maintains a deep appreciation for Idol<\/em>\u2019s role in her career, which propelled her from unknown to household name after she won the show\u2019s fourth season in 2005.<\/p>\n

Still, producers wonder what might have been with the \u201cWrecking Ball\u201d singer, who was a coach on The Voice<\/em>. \u201cMiley would have brought a lot of Katy-like sass to American Idol<\/em>,\u201d the insider says. \u201cCarrie is more reserved and will be nicer to the contestants.
