Chicago P.D.<\/em><\/a>\u2019s Kevin Atwater finally has a new love interest<\/a> in Valeria \u201cVal\u201d Soto \u2014 but actor LaRoyce Hawkins<\/strong><\/a>\u00a0is playing coy about the TV couple\u2019s future.<\/p>\n

Warning: Spoilers below for Chicago P.D. season 12, episode 3. <\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n

During the Wednesday, October 9, episode of P.D.<\/em>, Atwater (Hawkins) had instant chemistry with Val (Natalee Linez<\/strong>) after meeting at a bar, but he didn\u2019t get her number. Luckily, Val, who is a forensic psychologist, got called to help on an Intelligence Unit case and they were reunited.<\/p>\n

\u201cI don\u2019t think it\u2019s fate, initially. I think it does kind of fluster him at first, and then he\u2019s even more distracted,\u201d Hawkins, 36, exclusively told Us Weekly<\/em> of the character\u2019s reunion, adding, \u201cIt turns into an unexpected essential situation.\u201d<\/p>\n

\n\t\t\tRomances have run high in the Windy City since Chicago Fire\u2019s 2012 debut and the addition of Chicago P.D. in 2014 and Chicago Med in 2015. Whether you spent years pining over Casey and Dawson and were heartbroken when they divorced, or you counted down to Natalie and Will\u2019s wedding only to be heartbroken by [\u2026]\t\t<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

Atwater is under a lot of pressure<\/a> during the episode with his building tenants showing up at work and their only eyewitness constantly changing her story. After the eyewitness ends up beaten in her home, Atwater goes off on Val, blaming her for letting the woman leave the station.<\/p>\n

However, once they get the bad guys \u2014 and the woman is on the mend \u2014 he realizes that Val was not to blame. \u201cI was way out of line,\u201d Atwater told Val during the final scene, showing up at her house to apologize.<\/p>\n

\u201cI forgave you as it was happening,\u201d Val revealed, before calling him out for always being so distracted and constantly focused on other people\u2019s happiness. \u201cDo you have an off switch?\u201d she asked, to which he responded, \u201cNo. I haven\u2019t really figured that part out.\u201d<\/p>\n

Before Atwater could finish his sentence, Val leaned in and kissed him. \u201cI have a proposition. How about for the next hour you come inside, turn off your brain, turn off your damn phone and have fun with me?\u201d she said. Atwater was taken aback, but agrees to Val\u2019s conditions, kissing her as the two tumbled inside her apartment.<\/p>\n

\u201cAtwater feels safe to explore what letting go feels like,\u201d Hawkins told Us<\/em> of his character\u2019s choice to lean into a romance with Val. \u201c[He] feels safe to give himself grace.\u201d<\/p>\n

Moving forward, Hawkins said that Atwater needs to find harmony in his life to successfully be the \u201cinvisible bridge that he wants to be for his unit.\u201d He teased that Val will stick around and help him facilitate that lifestyle change.<\/p>\n

Atwater has to be able to \u201ccompartmentalize where [he] places [his] feelings,\u201d and his \u201cthoughts\u201d and energy,\u201d the actor explained. \u201cThat\u2019s why I\u2019m grateful for Val\u2019s character, because I think she teaches Atwater how to do that.\u201d<\/p>\n

Hawkins played coy about how long Val will be on the show<\/a>, noting that Atwater is \u201calways surprised\u201d when good things happen to him.<\/p>\n

\u201cShe comes with a certain set of skills, love skills, like patience and understanding that Atwater [is] never able to let his guard down around anybody because one, he doesn\u2019t believe that anybody is going to get it,\u201d Hawkins explained. \u201cBut she gets it. She\u2019s front row and center when she watches Atwater\u2019s phone going off, people showing up at the [police station].\u201d<\/p>\n

\n\t\t\tFall TV is looking a little different with shows like Found, Chicago Fire and FBI: International going through casting shakeups. The One Chicago franchise has been making headlines as several cast members across all three shows announced exits. Dick Wolf\u2018s Chicago universe started out with Chicago Fire, which premiered in 2012 and follows the emergency [\u2026]\t\t<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

He noted that Val will \u201cprovide some relief\u201d to Atwater as he continues to juggle his work, family and duties as a building super.<\/p>\n

Hawkins further hinted that Atwater and Val are more than a one-night stand \u2014 but that doesn\u2019t mean his BFFs Adam Ruzek (Patrick Flueger<\/strong>) and Kim Burgess (Marina Squerciati<\/strong>) will be joining them on double dates<\/a>.<\/p>\n
