Jelly Roll<\/strong><\/a> has quickly become a fan favorite with his authenticity and soulful sound, but there\u2019s a lot about the \u201cNeed a Favor\u201d singer that may surprise even his most dedicated fans \u2014 and his team.<\/p>\n

\u201cI\u2019ve known sign language since high school because I had a friend who was deaf,\u201d Jelly Roll, 39, tells Us Weekly<\/em>\u2019s 25 Things You Don\u2019t Know About Me in the latest edition of the magazine<\/a>, on newsstands now. \u201cI surprised my team the other day when I had a conversation with an [American Sign Language] interpreter.\u201d<\/p>\n

Don\u2019t judge a book by its cover, either, because the Grammy-nominated singer tells Us<\/em> he\u2019s also a bit of a bookworm.<\/p>\n

\u201cI read The Alchemist<\/em> and Tuesdays With Morrie<\/em> every year,\u201d he says.<\/p>\n

Jelly Roll\u2019s new album, Beautifully Broken<\/em>, is out on October 11.<\/p>\n

1. I\u2019ve known sign language since high school because I had a friend who was deaf. I surprised my team the other day when I had a conversation with an [ASL] interpreter.<\/p>\n

2. I cold plunge as much as I can. It\u2019s helped my health tremendously.<\/p>\n

3. My most starstruck moment was when Jon Bon Jovi<\/strong> introduced me to Paul McCartney<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

4. I was also starstruck by Reba McEntire<\/strong>. I can\u2019t not hug her.<\/p>\n

5. I\u2019ve been writing for my new album, Beautifully Broken<\/em>, since before we released Whitsitt Chapel<\/em>, and I\u2019ve never felt more inspired.<\/p>\n

6. If I didn\u2019t have music, I truly think I would be in jail or dead.<\/p>\n

7. The name \u201cJelly Roll\u201d came from my mother. The difference between a stage name and a nickname is you get to choose a stage name, you don\u2019t get to choose a nickname.<\/p>\n

8. Bette Midler<\/strong>\u2019s \u201cThe Rose\u201d reminds me of my mom. She\u2019s always struggled with mental health, and she\u2019d play that song when she felt better and would leave her room. It was one of the moments I realized early on how important the connection of music could be.<\/p>\n

9. When my dad was alive, we\u2019d meet every week to catch up. I still miss those talks.<\/p>\n

10. My tour bus is my favorite place to sleep. It\u2019s dark. It\u2019s cold. It\u2019s perfect.<\/p>\n

\n\t\t\tHe may have had an uncontroversial start to fatherhood, but Jelly Roll has always prioritized his family. The country singer welcomed his first child, daughter Bailee Ann, with ex-girlfriend Felicia in 2008. At the time, Jelly (real name Jason DeFord) was serving a prison sentence for a drug dealing conviction. \u201cA guard knocks on my [\u2026]\t\t<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

11. My daughter, Bailee, is now 16, which means it was 16 years ago that I knew I needed to change my life around.<\/p>\n

12. I\u2019m a big fan of The Rookie<\/em>. Bailee and I watch it together.<\/p>\n

13. The Rock<\/strong> was previously the most famous person in my phone book, but there have been so many [new] people who I can\u2019t believe have been so kind and have passed along their information. The phone book keeps getting more insane.<\/p>\n

14. Judge Todd<\/strong>, who sentenced me as a juvenile, and I partnered up in Nashville to offer those in juvenile detention alternatives to earn their high school equivalency and learn trades, including becoming certified electricians. The program just had its first graduating class and enrolled additional students. It\u2019s something I\u2019m extremely proud of and hope to roll out in other locations.<\/p>\n

15. Fan moments stick with me. When someone tells me what they are going through or sharing the date they got sober, it impacts me and sits with me so much more than people realize. At the premiere of my documentary, Jelly Roll: Save Me<\/em>, a fan shared that she lost her son to drugs but was able to connect with him when he played \u201cCreature\u201d for her to help her understand what he was going through. These are moments I take with me. I feel a responsibility to make music that\u2019s honest and tries to heal.<\/p>\n

16. My basset hound, Bussie the Bus Dog, has a longer backstage rider than I do. He deserves it.<\/p>\n

17. I\u2019m the youngest of four.<\/p>\n

18. I was honored to sing \u201cI Am Not Okay\u201d at the Emmys this year. It\u2019s the most nervous I\u2019ve ever been before performing, but what an honor to be asked to do it.<\/p>\n
