Fans are on the edge of their seats waiting for new episodes of Abbott Elementary<\/em><\/a> \u2014 and Us Weekly<\/em> has the scoop on what\u2019s to come in season 4.<\/p>\n

The hit ABC show previously ended on a high note when Janine (Quinta Brunson<\/strong><\/a>) and Gregory (Tyler James Williams<\/strong><\/a>) finally locked lips during the season 3 finale. Viewers can be rest assured that the kiss heard around the world<\/a> is just the beginning as Abbott Elementary<\/em> continues to raise the sitcom bar.<\/p>\n

\u201cOne of the funniest things about the show is Janine and Gregory thinking that their interactions don\u2019t massively affect everybody else in the school,\u201d Williams joked in the newest issue of Us Weekly<\/em> about the \u201creverberating effect\u201d of Janine and Gregory\u2019s presumed romance. \u201cIt is going to affect the school as a whole.\u201d<\/p>\n

Williams teased that Jacob\u2019s (Chris Perfetti<\/strong>) investment in Janine and Gregory\u2019<\/a>s romance would come back to haunt him.<\/p>\n

\n\t\t\tFans can\u2019t wait for school to be back in session to find out what happens on season 4 of Abbott Elementary. The hit sitcom, which debuted in 2021, focuses on teachers in a Philadelphia public school. After premiering on ABC, the show quickly became critically acclaimed and picked up many accolades, including Golden Globe and [\u2026]\t\t<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

\u201cJacob is really the only one who does know [about the kiss]. That\u2019s what going into the season \u2014 we are really keeping track of who knows what happened. Jacob is the only one who does know and the fact that he doesn\u2019t have an anxiety disorder at this point in time is nothing short of a miracle,\u201d Williams quipped. \u201cYou\u2019re going to see the fact that he\u2019s playing with [this] information. Everybody else feels [more] suspicious [of Gregory and Janine]. \u2026 There\u2019s definitely going to be a butterfly effect here. It\u2019s going to affect everybody and the school as a whole.\u201d<\/p>\n

Brunson had similar insight into where Janine and Gregory stand. \u201cI\u2019m really pumped about that [storyline],\u201d she teased. \u201cI\u2019m excited about Janine and Gregory both as individuals and as people who have had a situationship up until now.\u201d<\/p>\n

Aside from the Janine and Gregory of it all, season 4 promises two (!) Christmas episodes, more family members being introduced on screen and that highly anticipated crossover episode.<\/a><\/p>\n

The entire cast of Abbott Elementary<\/em> gave Us<\/em> an exclusive glimpse before the show returns to ABC on Wednesday, October 9, at 9:30 p.m. ET.:<\/p>\n

Janine Teagues<\/h3>\n

After a brief stint at the district, Janine is back to teaching \u2014 just in time for a big change in her relationship status. Brunson, who is an executive producer on Abbott Elementary,<\/em> is excited about the direction the show<\/a> is going as the writers continue to reveal more about each character.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe writers and producers \u2014 we have distinct visions. So my hope is always that I\u2019m not asking the actors to work overtime and they don\u2019t feel the need to do anything but come in and act. Of course they have [insight into their characters that they share]. And it\u2019s more them taking the material and performing it in a way that sometimes I don\u2019t even expect,\u201d she noted to Us<\/em>. \u201cI\u2019m like, \u2018Oh wow, that unleashed a new layer. I didn\u2019t see it that way, but the way you did it was exactly how that would be said.\u2019 It\u2019s a lot about how they say things and I think that\u2019s really cool with our process.\u201d<\/p>\n

The other perk of having a creative say is brainstorming new ideas like a crossover<\/a> episode.<\/p>\n

\u201cIt\u2019s very cool. It\u2019s unexpected and it\u2019ll be a delight to the audience of both shows. It\u2019ll be very exciting for the people who watch our shows and if they watch one show and not the other, that\u2019s cool too,\u201d Brunson shared. \u201cBecause it\u2019ll make people interested in [the other] show. It\u2019s just a fun way to shake up TV.\u201d<\/p>\n

Brunson confirmed that the crossover would happen \u201ca little later in the season\u201d but \u201cnot too far\u201d out. She also discussed how Abbott Elementary<\/em>\u2018s extended episode order would benefit season 4 since now there\u2019s 22 episodes to look forward to.<\/p>\n

\u201cWhat\u2019s fun about 22 episodes is being able to have multiple arcs throughout the season. I\u2019m just so excited to return to having longer arcs that last six episodes long. But then also having some that only last two episodes within the 22,\u201d she continued. \u201cI am really pumped to be able to tell those kinds of stories again because with our truncated season 3, it was a little bit harder to do and minimized the amount of different arcs we would\u2019ve done.\u201d<\/p>\n

Brunson concluded: \u201cI\u2019m excited about our holiday episodes. Those are just fun to do and they\u2019re so much fun for the audience. We will have a Halloween episode and a Christmas episode this year and that really just makes me happy.\u201d<\/p>\n

Season 3 ended as the school year came to an end but fans shouldn\u2019t be too worried about that inevitable time jump.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe always like to do somewhat of a catch up \u2014 whether it\u2019s visual or verbal. It\u2019s the top of the year so that\u2019s something that we\u2019ve established as a pattern that you can expect at this point now that we\u2019re going to do it,\u201d Williams told Us<\/em>. \u201cHow we\u2019re going to do it is always going to be unique. But I think at this point, it\u2019s safe to expect that we will catch up over the time missed.\u201d<\/p>\n

The update will help as everyone tries to figure out where<\/a> Janine and Gregory stand after finally acting on their feelings. Williams couldn\u2019t give too much away \u2014 except to say that there\u2019s some definite changes when it comes to our favorite TV couple.<\/p>\n

\u201cI can tell you right now, [Quinta and I] changed the way we did everything. We changed the way we did literally everything. Each year we have to approach [Janine and Gregory] in their dynamic differently and specifically the way they interact,\u201d he teased. \u201cWe had a lot of conversations before the season started and then after the season first started as we were kind of sharpening and narrowing things down as to how [do] they interact with each other physically? How do they interact with each other emotionally? There\u2019s different ways in which they\u2019re going to talk to each other. This will feel like an evolution of Janine and Gregory similarly to how they have the previous seasons.\u201d<\/p>\n

The actor continued: \u201cYou will definitely see those changes and we\u2019ve been working really hard to make sure that they\u2019re new and fresh and different than what the previous seasons were. This season should feel tonally different for them.\u201d<\/p>\n

Season 4 doesn\u2019t just shift things for Gregory in his personal life. His return to Abbott marks another attempt to make<\/a> an impact on his kids and evolve as an educator.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe\u2019re now getting into the day to day of Gregory at the school. What we hear from a lot of teachers is these smaller events that happen throughout the school year that really shape who you are and how you teach. I can definitely say based on even what we have coming so far, there are a lot more Gregory-oriented storylines,\u201d Williams shared. \u201cNot just navigating how he feels about kids but just a teacher as a whole. How does he interact with parents? We now have established a PTA \u2014 thanks to Tariq \u2014 so how does he interact with them as well? It\u2019s something that\u2019s been a real fun thing to explore for me. We\u2019re getting really in the weeds of the stories that are going to make Gregory a seasoned teacher.\u201d<\/p>\n

Gregory is also facing some challenges as the holiday season rolls around. After dressing up as Captain Sully Sullenberger<\/strong>, Gregory is determined to choose a Halloween costume<\/a> that resonates with his students and coworkers.<\/p>\n

\u201cGregory wants to do a really good job this year. We know enough about him to know that when he really wants to do a really good job with something, it\u2019s going to bother him whether it goes well or not,\u201d Williams joked. \u201cThe stakes are so high for him, always.\u201d<\/p>\n

\n\t\t\tIt\u2019s the busiest time of the TV year with shows such as Grotesquerie and The Perfect Couple kicking off the fall season. The Perfect Couple, which is based on Elin Hilderbrand\u2018s novel of the same name, centers around a wedding weekend in Nantucket that doesn\u2019t go exactly as planned. Most of the details have been [\u2026]\t\t<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

Melissa Schemmenti<\/h3>\n

When we last checked in with Melissa, she and Jacob were finding their groove as roommates. The obstacles, however, are not fully in Melissa\u2019s rearview mirror.<\/p>\n

\u201cIt\u2019s different living with a person vs. working with them,\u201d Brunson told Us<\/em>. \u201cNow [there are] things Jacob knows about her and things she knows about him.\u201d<\/p>\n

Lisa Ann Walter<\/strong> also teased a dinner episode fans won\u2019t see coming, telling Us<\/em>, \u201cWhen you see it, you\u2019ll know what I mean. But it is a super funny version of this kind of story and I\u2019m very excited for it. It\u2019s just chaos.\u201d<\/p>\n

As for Melissa\u2019s love life, Abbott Elementary<\/em> won\u2019t be boxing her in as she keeps exploring the dating scene.<\/a><\/p>\n

\u201cIn Melissa\u2019s [experience], women got with a guy and probably had kids. We still don\u2019t know that part of Melissa\u2019s story yet, but I think we will at some point hear what that journey was for her,\u201d she detailed. \u201cFor Melissa, getting a divorce was so big. It was big for her that she was just afraid to go and live a life the way it might\u2019ve been. So she\u2019s kind of doing that now.\u201d<\/p>\n

Walter even has ideas of her own about who Melissa could find love with in season 4. \u201cI could see Melissa getting with somebody like Big Dom [DiSandro]<\/strong> who circles around the Eagles,\u201d she quipped. \u201cA peripheral guy who is like a second assistant coach to one of the Philly teams.\u201d<\/p>\n

Another thing viewers should expect from Melissa this season<\/a> is a killer Halloween costume.<\/p>\n

\u201cI just got part of it fitted,\u201d Walter revealed after previously dressing up as Elizabeth Olsen<\/strong>\u2018s Wanda<\/em> from the Marvel universe. \u201cAnd I personally think that it beats everything. It beats everything. It tops it.\u201d<\/p>\n

Barbara Howard<\/h3>\n

Melissa isn\u2019t the only one pulling out all the stops this spooky season. \u201cIf it\u2019s Halloween, Barbara\u2019s going to dress up. If it\u2019s Christmas, she\u2019s going to sing,\u201d Sheryl Lee Ralph<\/strong> shared with Us<\/em> as Brunson promised \u201cmore fun\u201d for Barbara in the form of \u201cmore time with her kids.\u201d<\/p>\n

Just because Barbara is always teaching others<\/a> doesn\u2019t mean she can\u2019t learn something new. \u201cBarbara is becoming a lifetime student,\u201d Ralph teased to Us<\/em>. \u201cShe just keeps learning and evolving as a human being.\u201d<\/p>\n

That can also mean working through some growing pains. \u201cShe has love and respect from her children, but that doesn\u2019t mean that they do not have their ups and downs,\u201d Ralph continued. \u201cSometimes those downs can hurt.\u201d<\/p>\n

She added: \u201cHaving been at Abbott so long, with everything going on in the world, in her personal life and in her school life, she\u2019s probably thinking about her next chapters.\u201d<\/p>\n

Prepare for season 4 to shine an unexpected light on Jacob\u2019s origin<\/a> story.<\/p>\n

\u201cWhen I first read about where that storyline was going, I was kind of shocked about it,\u201d Perfetti told Us<\/em> about how introducing Jacob\u2019s family revealed \u201cthe genesis\u201d of his legendary corniness. \u201cThe people that we\u2019re going to meet in Jacob\u2019s life are \u2014 for lack of a better word \u2014 illuminating. \u2026 We can\u2019t really make people laugh with the same jokes over and over again. So it\u2019s always been a priority of our writers to try and delve deeper into who these people are.\u201d<\/p>\n

He continued: \u201cWhen you meet [a character\u2019s] family, you just get to show and paint with all of these colors that we\u2019re not really used to seeing. I\u2019m just so glad that we\u2019re doing it because a sitcom is kind of like a trap for two dimensionality. So keeping it fresh and keeping it relatable and keeping it real while keeping it funny is obviously very helped by our mockumentary format. But it\u2019s always been a top priority.\u201d<\/p>\n

When the new school year starts, Jacob is also still trying to find himself.<\/a><\/p>\n

\u201cWe found something really interesting last year in terms of sort of ripping Jacob\u2019s very close relationship away from him \u2014 both of his very close relationships with Janine and with [ex] Zach. There\u2019s a lot of meat there and it\u2019s really interesting to see Jacob flail a bit and not be able to anchor himself in a romantic relationship,\u201d Perfetti reflected in response to a question about Jacob\u2019s love life and newbie Avi.\u201dBut the cool thing about our show is that everybody who comes to play on the show as a guest just feels so of the world of Abbott. Once they\u2019re in, I feel like they\u2019re in and we\u2019re trying to create a vocabulary for our audience where they don\u2019t have to say goodbye to people.\u201d<\/p>\n

Abbott Elementary<\/em> still has an endless amount of story lines it can tell \u2014 and Perfetti has one to add to the wishlist: \u201cWe have to do a school play, obviously,\u201d he said. \u201cAnd I think it should be a two-part episode and maybe even a musical.\u201d<\/p>\n

Ava Coleman<\/h3>\n

Season 4 not only has a larger episode count \u2014 but a bigger budget too. For Janelle James<\/strong>, that means \u201cnew outfits\u201d for Ava as she continues to run the school her way. Brunson, meanwhile, told Us<\/em> we are about to see Ava like \u201cwe haven\u2019t seen her\u201d before.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe\u2019ll probably see more growth with her this season than we ever have before,\u201d Brunson revealed. \u201cMore than any other character, which is so exciting to me.\u201d<\/p>\n

Although we got a glimpse of Ava\u2019s grandmother<\/a>, the remaining relatives have remained a mystery \u2014 for now.<\/p>\n

\u201cI think you\u2019ll be surprised at Ava\u2019s family dynamic,\u201d Brunson hinted while James teased more relationship updates, saying, \u201cAva gets closer with her colleagues, students and\u2026 maybe someone else? We\u2019ll definitely be seeing her softer side.\u201d<\/p>\n
