Erik Men\u00e9ndez<\/strong> wants to watch Cooper Koch<\/strong>\u2018s portrayal of him \u2014 specifically in the critically acclaimed episode The Hurt Man \u2014 despite publicly denouncing Ryan Murphy<\/strong>\u2018s Monsters<\/em><\/a>.<\/p>\n

Koch, 28, recalled speaking with Men\u00e9ndez, 53, about the show while visiting him in prison, telling The Hollywood Reporter<\/em><\/a> on Saturday, September 28, \u201cOne of the first things Erik said was, \u2018I know you\u2019re doing great. You did a great job in episode five [The Hurt Man] and I\u2019m going to watch it.\u201d<\/p>\n

Erik needed some time before watching Koch recreate him discussing<\/a> the alleged abuse from his and brother Lyle Men\u00e9ndez<\/strong>\u2018s parents: Jos\u00e9 and Kitty Men\u00e9ndez<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

\u201cIt\u2019s difficult,\u2019\u201d Koch said Erik told him about the bottle episode that includes a single take lasting over half an hour. \u201cAnd I spoke to him about it, which was insane for me.\u201d<\/p>\n

\n\t\t\tNetflix\u2019s Monsters: The Lyle and Erik Men\u00e9ndez Story worked hard to make sure the cast resembled their real-life counterparts. The 10-episode limited series, which will be released on September 19, follows Lyle and Erik Men\u00e9ndez, who were convicted for the 1989 murder of their parents. The siblings confessed to the crime and claimed they killed [\u2026]\t\t<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

Season 2 of the hit Netflix series debuted earlier this month and chronicled Lyle (Nicholas Alexander Chavez<\/strong>) and Erik\u2019s (Koch) 1989 arrest for the murder of their parents, Jos\u00e9 (Javier Bardem<\/strong>) and Kitty (Chlo\u00eb Sevigny<\/strong>). Taking inspiration from footage of the trial and subsequent interviews, Monsters<\/em> mirrored key moments<\/a> from Lyle, 56, and Erik\u2019s lives before and after they were sentenced to life without parole for shooting their mother and father.<\/p>\n

Episodes 4 and 5 received critical and fan praise<\/a> for introducing Erik and Lyle\u2019s claims that they killed their parents in self-defense following years of alleged physical, emotional and sexual abuse. However, the show received backlash for several inaccuracies about the Men\u00e9ndez brothers, including the insinuation that they were in a sexual relationship.<\/p>\n

\u201cI believed we had moved beyond the lies and ruinous character portrayals of Lyle, creating a caricature of Lyle rooted in horrible and blatant lies rampant in the show,\u201d read a statement from Erik that was shared on Lyle\u2019s Facebook page. \u201cI can only believe they were done so on purpose. It is with a heavy heart that I say, I believe Ryan Murphy cannot be this naive and inaccurate about the facts of our lives so as to do this without bad intent.\u201d<\/p>\n

Erik made it clear he wasn\u2019t thrilled to hear<\/a> how he and Lyle were characterized. (The Men\u00e9ndez brothers presumably don\u2019t have access to streaming services<\/a> at Richard J. Donovan Correctional in California. Their family members, however, have seemingly watched and been able to pass down information to Erik and Lyle about the contents of the scripted show.)<\/p>\n

\u201cIt is sad for me to know that Netflix\u2019s dishonest portrayal of the tragedies surrounding our crime have taken the painful truths several steps backward \u2014 back through time to an era when the prosecution built a narrative on a belief system that males were not sexually abused, and that males experienced rape trauma differently than women,\u201d Erik\u2019s statement continued.<\/p>\n

\u201cThose awful lies have been disrupted and exposed by countless brave victims over the last two decades who have broken through their personal shame and bravely spoken out,\u201d he wrote. \u201cSo now Murphy shapes his horrible narrative through vile and appalling character portrayals of Lyle and of me and disheartening slander. Is the truth not enough?\u201d<\/p>\n

Koch, who visited Erik and Lyle earlier<\/a> this month with Kim Kardashian<\/strong>, was able to address the inmate\u2019s concerns in person.<\/p>\n

\u201cTo his statement, I understand how he feels and I get that it is so difficult to have your life \u2014 and not just your life \u2014 but the worst part of your life be televised in a dramatized, Hollywood version,\u201d the actor said on Thursday, September 26, during a Today<\/em> show appearance. \u201cI just get how difficult that would be and I stand with him. I understand it must be really hard.\u201d<\/p>\n

During his interview with THR<\/em>, Koch showed his support for Lyle and Erik getting released.<\/p>\n

\u201cThey\u2019ve done so much amazing work in prison. Erik teaches meditation. He teaches speech classes. They\u2019re both incredible people,\u201d he detailed. \u201cI think back then, people just didn\u2019t believe that sexual abuse between males was something that you could believe and the easier pill to swallow was that they killed their parents for money. But now, after so much time, I think people are more open to understanding that something like that did happen.\u201d<\/p>\n

\n\t\t\tErik and Lyle Men\u00e9ndez\u2018s murder case was thrust back into the spotlight with Ryan Murphy\u2018s Monsters \u2014 but is there a chance their life without parole sentence could be overturned? The Men\u00e9ndez brothers\u2019 parents, Jos\u00e9 and Kitty Men\u00e9ndez, were found dead at their Beverly Hills home in 1989. After Lyle called the police, they discovered [\u2026]\t\t<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

Koch added: \u201cIn fact, the warden told me himself that he feels like he\u2019d be happy to have them as his neighbors and that he would be comfortable letting them watch his children. I think that says a lot!\u201d<\/p>\n

While Koch stands by the Men\u00e9ndez brothers<\/a>, Murphy had a different take.<\/p>\n

\u201cI wouldn\u2019t go so far as to say they should be freed, but I think that their case should be reexamined, and I think new evidence should be presented,\u201d Murphy told People<\/em> on Friday, September 27. \u201cIf that case was tried and all of the evidence was allowed in today, I think they probably would\u2019ve been charged and found guilty of manslaughter and they would be out of jail now.\u201d<\/p>\n
